Why is it that players like Milton Bradley are given a pretty significantly long leash by fans, whereas players like Jock were booed the first day?
Just seems odd that some players get the benefit of the doubt while others are shredded before they even have a chance.
Fuk had a great April last year, but then sucked for 7 solid months and everyone still likes the guy.
Fontenot and Soto had very good years last year, but suck ass this year. As far as I know, they're not getting booed.
Hawkins had a 2.64 era for us in 2004, he walked only 14 and k'd 69 in 82 innings, numbers we would kill for in our bullpen today, but he was booed regularly.
It's just weird to me why some players are accepted and others aren't.
I got nothin'.

Wasn't Jocks the first post-Sosa RF? I'm sure that did him no favors. Or was that Burnitz?

Nobody liked the Jock signing. For the most part, people liked the Bradley signing.

I'm guessing Burnitz was overshadowed by DLee's <del>steroid</del> incredible season.

I think Fuk heard plenty of boos last season.
If I recall correctly Jock was pretty much a douchebag to the media when asked about what he thought about Cubs fans, so we/they in turn let him know what we thought about his shitty play.

Absolutely nothing like Jones. However, Jones also made some media comments that pissed off Cubs fans. So that's undoubtedly part of the issue. I guess Hawkins also did. Maybe the whole deal is to shut your mouth with the media and you'll be fine.

I think Butch is on to something with the perception of the signing before the players took the field. Bradley has a track record of being a good hitter whereas Jocks was puzzling. I don't recall Alou taking a lot of shit his first year here either. I think it cuts against Bradley, though, because he's more likely to get booed if he ultimately does not produce.

Exactly. No other team was even giving Jock a 1 year deal and Hendry ran out and gave him a 3 year deal. People hated Jock because there was never a chance he was going to live up to his contract. His attitude didn't help. Bradley and Fuk have shown that they at least have the potential to live up to theirs.

strap: i hated strap because after a year of jeromy burnitz, i felt we needed to upgrade rightfield. then we sign strap to a ridiculous three year deal. that was a killer. i may not have hated him so much if he was a one year rental, but 3 fucking years for a guy coming off a year where he batted under .250? fuck that shit. his shitty attitude didn't help either.
hawkins: when we signed him, i thought it was the best signing of the year. i didn't boo him until he started blowing saves. his shitty attitude didn't help either.
bradley: i thought this too was a good deal. my patience is wearing thin though, because it isn't a case of underacheiving, it's a case of him downright sucking. his shitty attitude isn't helping either.

I may be wrong, but I thought that comment was way after the boos started. I'm pretty sure Hawkins was booed when he was still an effective setup guy, but was blowing saves left and right. Then, it got really bad when he couldn't even pitch effectively in the 7th/8th.
I always felt bad for Hawkins cause he grew up loving the Cubs and then got booed out of town.
