<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->The Cubs officially placed catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, retroactive to July 7, and recalled outfielder Sam Fuld from Triple-A Iowa.
Soto is sidelined with a mild left oblique strain, injured Wednesday during batting practice, and he could be out for one month. He is expected to go to Arizona on Sunday to begin his rehab.
The Cubs are relying on Koyie Hill as the No. 1 catcher with Jake Fox as the backup. Fox could start Sunday when the Cubs play a day-night doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cubs did try to claim Philadelphia catcher Chris Coste, but the Houston Astros picked him up. The All-Star break gives general manager Jim Hendry more time to find some help.
"It's a very difficult position to find on the streets," Hendry said. "We'll get to the break and re-evaluate it. We've got some young guys at Iowa who aren't bad. We'll just keep looking."
The Iowa roster includes Steve Clevenger, a converted shortstop, and Chris Robinson, whom the Cubs acquired from Detroit in August 2006 for Neifi Perez. This year is the first either has been at the Triple-A level. The Cubs' 40-man roster is at 38.
Hendry said they decided to add a speed guy and someone who could help on defense, which is why Fuld got the call. The outfielder was pulled from Friday's game after the fourth inning. Can he catch?
"Yeah, I can catch," Fuld said. "I think I'm pretty low on the depth chart."
Soto is the 12th player to go on the disabled list this season. The Cubs began the year as one of two teams without a single player on the DL.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
