BTW, if you're not listening to B&B, tune in. You can tell that they're not quite OK with the deal, but they're trying to spin it like they think it's good.
Here's the thing too, it could turn out to be a great deal for the Sox. However, I think there's probably alot better chance this is not a good deal for them. It's a flyball pitcher, that gives up twice as many HR on the road as at home, going from the NL to the AL, that has an ERA a point higher away from his home park, that has a current ankle injury, has had a history of shoulder problems, is owed a bunch of money for the next 4 years, and has already previously turned down a trade to the team he's no going to. This could turn out bad, real bad.

Also, the Red Sox gave up alot for Martinez, who has been pretty shitty for a couple of months. He hit .175 and only had 1 HR last month.

I think they got a steal. They didn't have to give up either of their top two pitching prospects - Buccholz and Bard. Also Martinez is a proven hitter so sooner rather than later he would get out of his funk. Remember he was hitting close to .340 for the first two months of the season.

I'm not a huge fan of trading for catchers in the middle of the season. Especially one that is 30 years old. That said, that offense was pretty stagnant and a move was necessary.

i am 100% sure the white sox were going to do everything they could to get peavy with the soul purpose of one-upping the cubs. i don't even think they needed him.

If Peavy, and his full contract, was put on waivers, what percentage of teams would PASS on him, even without giving up prospects. Half? Two thirds? How many teams would take on a 50 plus million dollar salary, even without giving anything up? Maybe 10?
Out of those 10, how many would give up FOUR of their best prospects in order to secure the right to pay that contract? Would there even be three? I bet the field is narrowed down to one by then, but lets be generous and say three.

I'm not saying the Sox didn't do OK, I'm not saying they won't be better in the long run for making this deal, but what kind of genius does it take, given the current economy, to take on a huge contract, unload 4 of your best prospects, in order to trade for a guy on the DL?

Peavy looked like an ace at times this year, but to me he's still a #2. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a 4+ ERA in that park. I'm all about getting proven players like him, but it's a high price to pay for sure and I'm glad the Cubs didn't do it.

Understood. I'm not familiar with his criticism of KW at all. I simply don't think he adds much insight and merely reports "news" most of the time.
Regarding the future of the White Sox, I do not think that this move helps them in the long run at all. Just my opinion though.

Here's the thing. Even if Peavy pitches again this season and is effective for a few games, there was no reason to roll the dice on him before finding out if he will be durable for the remainder of the season. Hell, his own agent is shocked that it happened, so that tells you something. Why not wait until the offseason and revisit the trade? His trade value most likely goes down after this season, so there's no harm in waiting unless you believe you're buying low while Peavy sits on the DL. Sounds to me like KW made a move just to get attention.
