Cubs v. Astros 07.29.09
#46
I forgot about Happ, he has a real good shot if he keeps up his numbers. Hanson is another rookie with an outside shot.

If Kershaw was eligible, he would run away with it. Wells and Happ can take over Rasmus, it's just harder for a pitcher.

Nothing better than sending the Cards to the field with the pressure of a Cubs W already in the books.

I'd say it's about 50/50 it's Rasmus or one of Wells, Happ, or Tommy Hanson.

Whatever voters look past simply wins and losses will greatly benefit Wells as well. He should probably be like 10-3 right now and has a 2.84 ERA. He and Happ have been about even. Hanson only has 9 starts but he's the most hyped of the 3 and is 5-1 with a 2.95 ERA. He has the electric stuff that people tune in to see, whereas Wells and Happ just get it done but aren't as appealing to an average fan. Rasmus has been awesome 1 month, crap the other 3.

I don't buy Rasmus. He's currently number 9 in NL rookie batter VORP, right behind Jake Fox. Granted, he has far more plate appearances than anyone but Dexter Fowler, and, granted, homers influence votes more than VORP, but he isn't exactly raking (a .746 OPS?).

Incidentally, many NL rookie pitchers have far higher VORPs, including Wells.

Excuse my ignorance, but what the fuck is VORP and how does that affect what happens on the field?

Value Over Replacement Player

It basically means how much more valuable a player is than an average fielder and below average hitter is at the same position. So, if you can pick up someone like Neifi Perez or Aaron Miles for league minimum (basically, the type of player who is always available for cheap), how much more is the player worth to the team than someone like that.
