Time to play GM

<!--quoteo(post=65606:date=Oct 6 2009, 03:53 PM:name=Scarey)-->QUOTE (Scarey @ Oct 6 2009, 03:53 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec--><!--quoteo(post=65599:date=Oct 6 2009, 03:45 PM:name=rok)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (rok @ Oct 6 2009, 03:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->Dude, I don't understand why I'm being singled out here for saying anything that I've said. I've been burned too much in the past by the Shawn Boskies and Jim Bullingers of my time to not get overly excited about any Cubs pitching prospect who comes out of nowhere.

All the stats you throw out there are meaningless to me until I see Wells have a decent sophomore season. I don't know what you're getting at either, and I have no desire to argue over an opinion (mine).

Respect is earned over several years, not one year that could very well be a fluke.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Come on dude, you're not being singled out. Everyone has had gauged expectations about Wells since he started pitching in Chicago. I understand why to stat out with, it's not uncommon for a pitcher to have a few good games and then get beat on. But he's shown he knows how to pitch and has sustained his production throughout the whole year, what's wrong with getting a little bit excited here?

I don't expect anyone to think Wells is going to have a 3.00 ERA next year, but a number 4 can be successful by going out every 5th day and throwing a sub 4.20 ERA. Is that an impossible task for Wells?

I just don't know why we have to walk on broken glass about Wells. I am excited about the production we've gotten out of him and am looking forward to what he can do for the Cubs going forward (whether that's in a trade or in the rotation). That's not a bad thing.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I've watched him pitch enough, and even in September when we essentially were out of it already. I'm sorry, but I can't understand how anyone can predict with any sort of confidence that Wells will be an above average starter for years to come. I'm not saying he won't, but I'm just unconvinced.

And if you re-read my comments in this thread, I said several times I'd be happy with Wells as our #5. I just don't want 2 unknowns at the back-end of our rotation. That is a recipe for disaster if/when Wells comes down to earth.

There's nothing wrong with adding real depth to the rotation, so that we don't get caught with our pants down like we did this season when 4/5 of the rotation ended up on the DL. I don't see how that's anything but a prudent approach.

But this is where you're wrong. There is a problem with that when you're adding depth by spending a lot of money. It's a big reason why Marquis was never liked around here. He had a large dollar amount tied to him for a back-of-rotation production.

Sinking too much money into mediocre players is a problem we've had for the last few years. We need to stop that so we can use it for the elite players. It's time this Cubs franchise start depending on their farm system like every other team in the league. Otherwise, we're going to have to overpay old players like Soriano and regret the contracts later.

I never said anything about adding mediocre SPs like Marquis. I never wanted him and still don't. If we don't add a high quality, proven arm to the front end of the rotation, then we need to brace ourselves for another average season. I don't know why Wells is getting all the focus in this discussion and not Shark/Gorzelanny. This is actually what I'm worried about the most, yet we're spending all this energy arguing over Wells, who I already said would make a fine #5.

PCB, I really don't think that is applicable comparison. Harkey was a first round pick out of a major college who was a dominant pitcher until injuries ruined his career.

I would much rather spend the Lackey money on offense. I want so much to have a real centerfielder, and a real shortstop.

Laugh now. Moving Zambrano and getting out from under his contract would make this team much better off in my eyes.

I really thought we'd have 2 great SPs to lead our staff for years to come with Maddux and Harkey. That worked out well for us.

So you think we have a better chance to win next season if we replace Zambrano with Marshall? The object of baseball is to win, correct?
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

Then show how using Z's money to improve the team. Trading Z just to replace him with Marshall makes us worse -- I don't see how you can argue otherwise.
