Sure makes the Bradley contract look even sillier in retrospect.

Really? His one year, $5 mill deal definitely did.

But two years and $19 mill for Abreu at his age? Pass.

Considering how consistent Abreu has been, and even though he's become a shitty fielder, I'd gladly pay $24 mil over 3 seasons for Abreu vs $30 mil for a self-destructive loon.

That was not an option when the Cubs signed Bradley. At that time, Abreu was looking for 12 million a year. it was only after everyone who was looking for an OF had already signed one that Abreu's asking price came down. The only way the Cubs could have got Abreu was to wait until everyone else signed, wait until the economy completely cratered, THEN played a game of chicken with Abreu, as unlike the Angels whose outfield was set even without Abreu, the Cubs needed Abreu badly. So we still would not have got him at 5 million.

Abreu's 5 million dollar salary last year is a complete anomaly, and isn't indicative of anything other than the market at the time he signed. This signing, on the other hand, objectively, makes NO sense. If he was only worth 5 million last year, why is he worth 20 million now, after getting a year old, having a season that was possibly worse than 2008, and ticket sales down 8 percent across the league?
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

That's different - you're including the $5 mill year, which also happens to be the youngest year.

I'm just talking about this deal: 2 years and $19 million for a 36 year old, whose OPS has declined in 5 straight seasons (except one tiny increase two years ago), and whose defense has fallen off a cliff. To me, that's a crappy deal.

It may not be a bargain, but at least the Angels will get some value out of Abreu, even now that he's older. He is still a very productive player, shitty defense and all. We'll be lucky if we aren't forced to eat half of Bradley's salary and most likely will get little value in return.
