Some fond memories of Andre Dawson:
#1
1. Dawson takes a pitch in the face from Eric Show of the Padres. After regaining consciousness, has to be restrained by every player on the field, the umps, 5 ushers, 2 hot dog vendors, Ronnie Woo Woo, and Cindy Sandberg. Eric Show is last seen running to the dugout.

2. Dawson takes a called third strike and is peeved by the call. He throws a fit, and then he throws 12 bats on the field....at once....like they were tooth picks. Making sure the umpire gets the point, he throws another dozen for good measure.

3. last home game of 1987, last at bat. I had just walked in the door from spending the day at the beach. The crowd is bowing to him, chants of MVP are heard everywhere. Dawson blasts the ball onto the street. I almost cry.

4. Dawson throws runner out....at first. The first time I ever saw that, and possibly the last.

5. 1988, I'm at a game with a friend. We're there early, so we're sitting in the front row hoping to watch BP. Nobody is n the field at first, but then Dawson runs from the dugout with a teammate to play catch. I yell his name as loud as I can. He stops and looks. I give him the "Black Power" fist and he gives it right back. People nearby ask me if I know him. I tell them I do. One of the coolest moments of my young life.

There are other moments like the 3 home run games and the series against the pirates when he hit two grand slams (both losses of course), the blank check he signed to play with the Cubs, but those 5 stick out the most for me.

I will always remember that 3 home run game against the Phils. I remember the paper the next day saying Andre Dawson 5 Phillies 3.

I was at the Show beaning game with my dad. So many mixed emotions for an 11 year old to take in on that day. It was a mixture of fear and excitement.

I wish we could put video to some of these moments. I was born in 79 so much of my Dawson memories are fuzzy.

I have looked all over the net for the Eric Show game but I don't think it can be found.

I'm with you. I was born in '81 and started watching the Cubs in about '88. All I really remember clearly is anxiously awaiting each once of Dawson's at bats (but I didn't get WGN, so I only saw a couple games a week on my local Fox channel in Northern Indiana), and I also remember trying to get as many of his baseball cards as I possibly could.

It's out there now--at about 1:20 into this:

I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

My great aunt, who was mentally retarded, was a huge Cub fan (insert joke), just as my grandmother, who took care of her, was. My grandmother had taped the game with Dawson throwing the bats onto the field, and EVERY time she played it, my great aunt would start yelling "Anita, Anita (my grandmothers name), he's doing it again!!" when Dawson erupted.

I'd also add that I was at a game in which I think Dawson threw a perfect knee high strike, from the right field corner, to gun down Casey Candaele(I think) at third trying to stretch a double into a triple. I'm 75 percent sure it didn't bounce once.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.
