With the fringe guys that we have in the pen, he could get his shot here.

It's amusing...when you consider that there's room for 150 non-closers in all major league pens combined...just how many on 25 man rosters can't possibly be among the best 150 middle relievers in professional baseball.

Do you think the middle relievers that are on 25-man rosters are necessarily the best middle relievers in baseball?

I don't. First of all, they're not evenly distributed. Maybe the Yankees have 8-10 of the top 150 (just a hypothetical) on their roster and in their system. Or maybe there are teams refusing to give up on shitty pitchers they're stuck paying a bunch of money to. Or maybe someone that used to be a marquee player is hanging on and a team is letting them out of loyalty or because they sell a lot of merchandise. Certainly there is unrecognized talent scattered around the minors...guys that are in a system but don't fir some idiotic manager's philosophy. Maybe lots of things. I'm just saying that the Majors might not be home to the best 150 middle relievers...or the best 150 starters...or the best 30 closers.

Yeah, straw, I think your point is almost inarguable. In fact Bill James has said for years that there are probably 50-60 guys in the minors who are easily as good as the 24th and 25th men on MLB rosters.

Some of this is pretty obvious; I mean, Strasburg is in the minors. Ryan Howard played in the minors a couple extra years (when he was crushing MiLB pitching), because Jim Thome was blocking him on the Phils.
Wade Boggs was a minor leaguer for about 6 years (!)

Throw in the fact that middle relievers have massive fluctuations in effectiveness from year-to-year, and you can see why some teams think it's crazy to pay big money for middle relief.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

The only question remaining is how long until CHC5151 starts a thread called "Parisi Call-up Watch," whether here or at some other, less gay-friendly Cubs board.
