Fuk
#1
When the Pirates pitcher faked the bunt, and chopped the ball over Fuk's head, the Cubs were down 3-1. It was the seventh inning and no reason to think the Cubs offense had much chance of coming back. Yet Fuk busted his ass and went back and caught the ball. That was not just a great play, but a great physical and mental effort.

The Cubs aren't as out of it as they look. They seem like a bunch of over the hill fucktards, half assing it, but it is probably just a bad stretch of games. The Reds went from last to first over the last 3 or so weeks. Nice win today. I am not ready to call an end to the Cubs chances.
I like you guys a lot.

The reason's I still think we stand a chance:

BA & OBP: 7 players with BA over .300 and OBP over .350 (even DLee has an OBP of .337 despite his .230 ba).
SP & CL: The SP has been pretty damn good. They've been a little sketchy lately, but for quite a while had a sub 4 era as a unit. Marmol has been steady thus far.
Effort: I think it's actually been there. There are times where individuals have looked bad, but collectively, they're almost always in every game.

Reason's why we suck:

Batting with RISP: The Cubs are 2nd in the NL in BA but 8th in Runs. The team just doesn't produce like they should with RISP. 18 games where we've scored 3 or less runs.
Bullpen: 5.35 era, 1.540 whip
Close Games: 7-14 in games decided by 2 runs or less.
I got nothin'.

Cubs should have enough talent but aren't winning nor are they showing signs that they can win on a regular basis.

They have dug themselves into a sizable hole by losing against bad teams.

From today's Tribune:
<i>
"The Cubs have finished a stretch in which they played 32 of 35 games against teams with sub-.500 records last season, the only exception being Florida.
They were 15-20 in that stretch, with playoff teams Colorado and Philadelphia the next two opponents.
Even more troubling is that the Cubs are 9-12 against Central Division teams. Take out Milwaukee, and it's 4-11 against the division."</i>

Plenty of season remains go but what has this team done to make anyone believe that they can win, regularly, against good teams?

They couldn't beat good teams last season either. That said, I think bullpen aside, this is a better team than last year's. How much better, I have no idea. Very few teams with shit bullpens and inconsistent offenses have the ability to go on long winning streaks, and that is exactly what we need right now to get back in the race. Playing the Phillies, Rockies, Rangers, Dodgers, and Tards next is not going to make things any easier. We could be comfortably in last place 2 weeks from now, and if so someone needs to lose their job.
