To be honest I've been pretty underwhelmed by the standard of play as a whole so far. Was expecting great things from the Ivory Coast v Portugal game, but other than that one shot by Ronaldo it was really quite boring. I guess nobody wants to lose their first match, so all the opening games will be pretty tight affairs, I just really hope teams open up and attack a bit in the next week or so.
Germany look ominously good which is annoying, Holland looked OK against a very average Denmark team, Italy looked slow and tired and Brazil I think were taken by surprise by North Korea. On the subject of North Korea, I actually though they were half decent, especially their number 9. Have to say I loved their orchestrated section of fans, and the fact that back in North Korea everybody probably thinks they've won 1-0.
Looking forward to Spain today, hopefully they can finally spark this World Cup to life. South Africa v Uruguay should be good too, especially as I've picked Uruguay to get out of that group in my work's World Cup competition (each team has a points value, eg Brazil 22, North Korea 1, you have 100 points, choose a team from each group and score a point for every point they score in the group stages and a point for every goal they score). Just for interest, the teams I chose were:
Uruguay, Greece, England, Australia (ouch), Cameroon, Paraguay, Ivory Coast, Chile. Also had some points left over so I got two bonus teams, South Korea and Slovenia. Makes the World Cup a bit more interesting when you have a team in each group. Today I've got Chile and Uruguay playing for me.

They'll be fine. They had plenty of chances to score, and they will score plenty against Honduras. And FWIW, I don't think the Swiss are that bad of a team at all. They played really tough in Germany and didn't allow a goal, then they beat Portugal and if it weren't for a field full of puddles they would have beaten the Turks in Euro 2008 to get out of their group.

Good points. The first round of the group stage so far hasn't really been up to the hype. Germany and South Korea have probably been the best teams so far. Then again, I kind of expected to be disappointed with Argentina, Italy and France. None of those three lost their first games, but I really don't think they're going to get to the final. I like what I've seen of Uruguay so far, and it's going to be really interesting Friday to see if England and the US can play well in games where they're overwhelming favourites.
As for that pool you're in, that's awesome. Good luck, that seems like a bunch of fun.

I'm reserving my judgement regarding the Germans until after they play a strong team. The Socceroos looked like garbage. I think the Spanish will be fine, all the analysts seem to be forecasting them having to play Brazil in the first knockout stage as if it's impending doom. I think the Brazilians are strong, but have no doubt the Spanish can take them. It would make for a hell of a game though.
The Uruguay game was a fun one to watch today. One of the most entertaining of the entire tournament thus far.

North Korea looked like they were going to give Argentina a run after the first half but now it's a blow out. Looks like it's 12 years hard labor for the team when it gets back to the motherland.

Think you might be slightly confused, that was the 'good' Korea (South) against the Argies. 'Bad' North Korea are in the group of death with Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast.

Good game for Higuain. I don't know why Maradona even considered leaving him off the squad. Higuain is a 1st rate player. Messi hasn't opened up yet, but he's creating havok on defenses without scoring a goal. That defense still makes me slightly nervous though.

Have to say watching the French be complete and utter crap was highly amusing. I've never seen a team appear as if they care less than the French in this World Cup. Individually they have some great players, but as a team they are quite simply shocking. And leaving Thierry Henry on the bench is one thing, but not even brining him on when you're chasing a game is something else entirely. Idiots.
Today should be very interesting. We'll see whether Germany are actually good or the Aussies were just exceptionally crap, and whether the US can break down a team that is just going to have 10 men behind the ball at pretty much all times. Also see whether England can fuck up again, I'm sure we'll find a new and novel way to not win tonight, something along the lined of a comical own goal, or missing 3 penalties or something. I'm wearing my England shirt underneath my work shirt today, and I've already seen a couple of dozen people doing the same on the way in this morning.
On a slightly different note, I was reading about a Helen Mirren interview on the Letterman show where she tore into BP (fair enough), but also the 'British' football team. Now, I know I'm being pedantic with this, but there is no such thing as a British football team, there is an English one, a Scottish one, a Welsh one and a Northern Irish one. Referring to Britain being in the World Cup is likely to anger quite a few Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish, as their teams are useless and didn't come close to qualifying. Also, Mirren's story about the origins of Football was interesting to say the least. Also complete and utter rubbish. She's annoyed me a little bit if I'm honest.
As for the Argies, I'm pretty confident they'll explode at some point in the tournament. They have a history of doing it, and having mad-man Maradona as your manager is hardly going to help matters. I can see them strolling to the Semi's and then getting 3 players sent off in a match and getting thumped. Probably by Germany. Bloody Germans.
