Even if you believe he'll be a #3 starter for the rest of his career, he's still far better off in the rotation than in the bullpen.
And to answer your question, I think there's a strong possibility that Z just needs some time to get into a regular routine and settle in -- which he hasn't really had the opportunity to do at all this season. I'm not saying we'd see a 3.00 ERA if he was given 32 starts this season, but I feel pretty confident saying that we'd see numbers much closer to his career averages than we've seen.

I think as long as you don't expect Z to be a #1, then the output that he should produce in the rotation is more than acceptable, even over the past 2 seasons. It isn't his fault that he was given such a huge contract (which he did earn at the time BTW). A lot of shit happens, especially after logging so many innings as a young pitcher. Look at some of his peers. It isn't as if all of them consistently have the exact same season year in and year out and are always around their career #s. Then again, even Z's worst years still haven't been bad ones, so at least give the guy some time to work through whatever this is. Plus he is insane.

I think if Z continues to let up between 1.4 and 1.6 baserunners an inning, as he has for the last 2 years, we will eventually be VERY unhappy with his performance. I'm not rooting for this outcome, but the numbers are pretty bad.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

Z looks sharp again tonight. His era is now down to 3.98. 6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 6 K against a decent lineup.

He's also got 2 singles and an RBI. He looks very together.

The main thing I've gotten out of the game tonight is that the thought of a double play from Darwin Barney to Blake DeWitt to Micah Hoffpauir is pretty fucking depressing.

Yeah, but that's a September infield. I really don't believe that's our April infield.

Update #2: Z's era is now down to 3.94. 7 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 7 K. His night is probably over as he's up to 95 pitches.
