Quote:I honestly don't care about this season, but I swear I'll go full blown meatball this offseason if the Rickettses don't spend significant money to improve the team. There's only $43 in guaranteed salary obligations for 2022, so they can shove their biblical losses right up their MAGA asses.
As a fan, I definitely feel like the Ricketts know me. In the biblical sense.

But it really is embarrassing that a team like the Cubs have to completely blow up the team and go full rebuild. With their financial advantage, it shouldn't ever come to this. The Marlins? Sure. But it's absurd that they're in this position again already. Somehow a team like the Rays find a way to compete every single season and they're in a much tougher division than the NL Central with a fraction of the cash flow. I was all in favor of it with new ownership and Theo at the helm -- it absolutely made sense then. But we're doing this shit again already?

During that rebuild the argument for why it needed to be that painful was of course in part about ensuring the highest draft picks, but also that the Cubs couldn't afford a less painful rebuild because they didn't have the money the Dodgers for instance did who had just gotten a big TV deal. Fast forward and the Cubs now own the neighborhood and their own network. Did they get Dodgers' money for the network in terms of what was guaranteed? I'm sure not. Interestingly though, if they have less money guaranteed and profits are more tied to the channels' performance, they can't exactly let the team tank.
Jed talked a lot about two forms of capital they were low on, prospects and cash to acquire players. Let's hope they don't just stick to the former, because rich teams don't need to do that, and by all measures, they should be a rich team.

I can honestly say this current team is the worst Cubs team I have ever seen. But if youre going to purposely suck, may as well go the whole hog.

Agreed, this is the worst Cubs team in my lifetime. And it isn't even close. And any blogger types out there making predictions that there's no possible way this team can catch the Pirates or DBags for one of the top 3 draft picks clearly hasn't been paying close enough attention as to the historical abomination this roster has become.

KB was never sticking with Cubs so less concerned with his commentary. He’s looking for a west coast team to sign him to a long term $200-300 MM contract.
Rizzo’s comments on the other hand can leave a mark.

If KB signs a $200-300 million contract with any team, I'll eat my shoe.

If Giants continue to win and KB has a great post season, could see him getting >$200 MM - even if its a Nationals special with significant portion deferred until hell freezes over or the Cubs get into the playoffs - whichever comes first

If he were 3-4 years younger (like Harper & Machado when they hit the FA market), then I might agree with you. Given past injuries, some inconsistent production since 2019 and the fact that he is viewed more as a corner OF now than a 3B, I have my doubts that KB will eclipse even the $175million threshold. Good for him though if he does.

I've never seen a player look worse than him in a Giants uni.
