There's a nebulous middle-ground where he really is hurt, and doesn't say so and stays in, at non-hustle capacity without letting his manager know and make a decision. If that's the case, he deserves his manager's wrath but not his manager bitching about him to reporters. Which is ALWAYS a fucking bush thing for a manager to do. In this case, it wasn't only bush, it was stupid.
