Defense was always considered Upton's biggest shortcoming though, so it's not surprising that he didn't work out as a SS after being rushed to the big leagues. The consensus view on Castro seems to indicate that he has what it takes, defensively, to be a great big league SS. To me, it seems like the worst cast scenario of bringing him up now is that in the short term, we end up with a similar hitter to Theriot with a better glove.
