Given that it was in production long before anyone had ever heard of Paranormal Activity, don't you think that's unlikely?

Paranormal was finished in 2007 and got dicked around by several studios and almost was buried into obscurity if not for fan outpouring, so <b>no</b>, it is very much a likely scenario.
