So no reason to think Sandberg would be bench coach.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Sure there's a reason. The same reasoning that you just gave with Trammell. If the Cubs think Sandberg is the manager of the future - which, regardless of his HOF player status, he's a rising star in the managerial ranks - they may want him as a bench coach with the big club (or some other coaching capacity, like hitting instructor as the article suggests). Is there a limit on bench coaches?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yes. There's a limit on the number of coaches that a team can have in uniform. There's been nothing from the Cubs to indicate that they think Sandberg is the manager of the future or a shoo-in for the job in 2011.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'm not disputing that. But the last time the Cubs hired a
Nothing other than his promotion from Peoria to Tennessee, and then subsequent award of manager of the year?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The latter is meaningless. 1 out of 4 gets that every year (given the short seasons, I'm guessing nobody below Peoria ever gets it). This is his 3rd season in the minors, so controlling for everything, you'd think he'd have a 75% chance of winning it once. This year, only 2 teams made the postseason, so there's a pretty good chance it would be 1 out of 2.

As for the former, you're reading a ton into it if you think that is evidence that he will be the 2011 manager.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Maybe. I should add the additional piece of what I'm considering: he has repeatedly stated his aspiration to be a MLB manager. Like it or lump it, that will carry some weight with the Cubs.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Of course it will. But just because he wants to be the manager doesn't mean he'll get it. The Cubs haven't gone into a season with a rookie manager since 1975.

I think Sandberg and Trammell are about even right now to get the job. If we have a good season next year, Trammell's got to be the favorite.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]
