Wouldn't expecting a guy like DeRosa to maintain or better his career year which occurred at age 33 be the very definition of "Gary Gaetti" syndrome? Much more so than expecting a guy to repeat his age 28 season, like Fontenot?

I agree. And I brought up Gaetti at the time. I had no problem trading DeRosa, and was impressed that the Cubs finally traded someone at their peak (even if I wasn't happy with what they got in return). But I wanted to use the savings to sign the O-Dog, and instead we gave 2B to Fontenot. Trading DeRosa wasn't the problem- expecting Fontenot to perform at a high level was.
