I thinkt hat sometimes there's a fine line between being stubborn and over-confident. You obviously like to see the overconfidence in this case. Marmol has made batters look downright foolish at times and maybe he's a combination of both stubborn and confident by thinking nobody can hit this slider, despite it being a ball. Either way, it'd be nice if he relied on that gauranteed strike in the 2-0 or 2-1 count rather than 3-0. Didn't Maddux always say the most important pitch count was the 2-1?

It's definitely overconfidence, but it's stupid. Get ahead in the count, and then that slider is much more likely to be swung at. Nobody hits him, even his "get me over" fastball is still 94+ mph, it's not like they're going to spank it all the time. There's been a bunch of times there's a 3-1 count, he throws that fastball, the hitter is ready for it, and they still can't do anything with it. He just tries to get too fancy sometimes when he doesn't need to. It's very much like the problems Farnsworth had. He got too in love with his slider when he had a 100 mph fastball. If I had heat like that, I'd want to show it off all the time.
And he has a reputation all around the league now for being incredibly wild. Most teams are going to take a pitch or two to start the at bat against him(the smart hitters anyway). Just pump a fastball in there.
