The only thing that scares me with Vitters is that in 269 plate appearances, he had 7 walks. This is a guy that doesn't have a whole lot of discipline. Hopefully he can learn some.

Absolutely. And I don't want to fall into the same excuses people made early on for Colvin ("well, he's hitting .350, so why should he be taking pitches"). At the same time, IIRC, Vitters did not strike out a ton to go along with those 7 walks. There's a magical ratio that is little talked about that I've read is the best predictor of major league success for a hitter: extra base hits to strikeouts.
Seems strange, but if a player has a 1:1 ratio in that (it's really rare), he's very likely to become a good major league hitter. Vitters wasn't quite there, but he was close-ish.
