The Cubs designated right-handed pitcher Luis Vizcaino for assignment. The Cubs were trying to trade Vizcaino before bringing up Jeff Samardzija from Triple-A Iowa.
General manager Jim Hendry tried to be creative with other teams, including the Washington Nationals, and tried to save some money before having to release Vizcaino.
It will take 72 hours for Vizcaino to go through waivers, and the Cubs will have seven days to either release him or trade him.
Vizcaino is making over $3 million. His contract was initially taken on due to the fact the team had to trade right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis in order to have enough money to sign free agent Milton Bradley. Mark DeRosa's money also was part of the equation in signing Bradley to a three-year contract.
