You could make a real strong case that Santo was the very best player in all baseball that year; Mantle and Mays had their usual kick-ass seasons, of course, but Santo led the NL in OBP, came 2nd only to Mays in SLG, and won a GG at 3rd, despite being only 24 years old.
And he was at least "in the discussion" for the Very Best Player in MLB for the next 3-4 years.

There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance
