I think he's trying to say (without blatantly saying it) that the Yankees won before Soriano was there, but never with him.

Stone is using a poor argument... they would have won the 2001 World Series if the greatest relief pitcher of all-time could have held the lead in the bottom of the 9th of Game Seven. It's extremely rare for Mariano Rivera to blow a post-season save, but he did against the D-Backs.

Had Rivera performed in his usual manner, not only do the Yankees win the series, but Alf is the fucking hero...he hit a mondo-clutch go-ahead homer (it would have been the game-winning, Series-winning HR) in the late innings against Curt Schilling, giving the Spankees what seemed like an insurmountable lead.

So yeah, Stone is right about it being a hideous contract, but totally about trying to pin the Yankees' demise on Alf.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance
