Spoke with Steve Stone at dinner on Friday
#38
I love Stoney! I always respected how he was a fan you could tell, but not a blind one. If the team was crappy, he wouldn't sugar coat it. He saw his duty was to broadcast the game accurately even if it wasn't flattering to the team brass, players, coaching staff, or even sometimes fans he thought were out of line. All the while teaching baseball. I was never a huge Chip fan but he had some not so shimmering remarks referring to the Cubs organization at the time as well. Mark Grace is another that said he loved his time in Chicago but would never work for the Cubs in any capacity again. Although I think that may have expired when McPhail left. In all cases I believe it's beyond sour (seedless) grapes! As for him and the Sux, the guy loves baseball, I believe he would have loved to have been with the Cubs forever if treated with respect. Since he wasn't, went to another former team and as a professional would "rides for the brand" They're lucky to have him!
