It's really not that complicated at all (as far as simply "playing" it). A lot of people are saying this is the shooter for everyone. It's easy to play, tough to master. As far as easier characters go, I'd say Soldier 76 if you like being a damage dealer/assault character. Defense: Bastion, and he is waaaaay overpowered. Tank: Roadhog is very straightforward. Just hook them, pop them with the shotty in the face....it'll one shot many characters. Support: Mercy, you got a healing ray (alternate mode is damage buff) and just fly around healing folks (though being a GOOD support is crucial in this game).
It's really well balanced, and well polished. Early on it will be rough, in the sense that you are still learning the maps, learning how to counter other characters, etc etc. I played a lot of matches early on in Training against the AI. It's a GREAT way to learn the maps/modes/characters you have never played.
Jeffy I sent you a request, mine is nakedman1664#1370 if anyone else plays and wants to add.
Edit: also pay attention to the voice queues in the game. Like when McRee says "It's higggggggh noon" you know he's about to pop his ultimate, or when you hear a "Behind you" that means there is someone right on your ass. Plus if you play with headphones, each character has a specific sound to their footsteps (and the volume of them is related to how far away from you they are)....so if I'm running around as a squishy whomever, and hear lets say Reinhardt footsteps I know to back off the other way.
