Votto declined to congratulate Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd(notes) following his impressive defensive play during the All-Star game Tuesday. Afterward, he told ESPN that he doesn’t like the Cubs.

Votto clarified his remarks Friday, saying he has great respect for the Cubs. He added that he “can’t say as much for their fans.”

The Cubs clinched the NL Central title in Cincinnati in 2007, Votto’s first season in the majors. Thousands of Cubs fans were in the stands at Great American Ball Park for that game. I was at 2 of those games in Cincy, so I guess I'm part of the problem. Now, I'm really loving the fact that we got under this douche's skin from day 1.

Reds fans have always been burnt up by that - the stadium is always literally half blue. He's pretty close with the fans, so I guess that's where this is all coming from.

Then be upset with Reds fans for not filling up their own ballpark. His frustration is misguided.
