Wait - there are people who still believe the Fukudome contract was not outrageous the day it was signed? I won't get into the whole hindsight part of this (obviously the deal sucked) or the merits of signing him at all (I was opposed to signing him at all - "Fuk-Flop").
But even if we place ourselves in that moment, and decided we HAVE to sign him, I'm pretty sure there were not any reported offers out there that topped $40 million. The Cubs gave him $48 million.
