It would be funnier if that were an accurate description of either the World Cup or WWII.
WC: France forfeited, America was there right on time (taking England to a draw, impressively...and screwed out of a win to Slovenia) and I don't think England would have it any other way.
WWII: France surrendered (wisely), America turned up late and England had to defend itself against the Germans until then, but were hardly the only country fighting the Germans.
