Meaning that the fact that Grabow is worse vs. lefties should be more important than the fact that the batter is worse vs. the average LHP? I think it's safe to say that most lefthanded batters are worse vs. LHP- so if Grabow is worse vs. lefhanded batters than righties, doesn't that mean that he is so bad that he has overcome the general trend of lefties struggling vs LHP to the point that he actually makes them better than they are against the average RHP?... and following that, there is no reason to use his handedness as a crieteria for bringing him in.

This is a great point that is rarely considered.

Wonderful point, except that the guy selling beers or the guy washing the Cubs' jock straps could have thrown better than Grabow (who has no business on the mound until he gets his shit worked out). Point taken, though... and it is a good point (Grabow's 2010 meltdown aside).

I think your point and his are mutually reinforcing.

I'm not making Lou out to be a scapegoat, but he IS a part of the problem. A big big part. A huge part. Enormous.

The funny thing is, since the season started, I've rarely posted anything about the Cubs, positive or negative. To say I jump on anyone is misguided for anything is misguided. I barely ever even talk about the Cubs anymore.

But i do read, and every time i read anyone say anything negative about this team, you inevitably jump in and defend anyone who's getting ripped. It's a constant, like the river flowing to the sea.

OK, first off, calling me a grumpy fuck was the least of my concerns. I've been called a lot worse, often by my own family.

Second, Lou isn't a scapegoat. That would imply that I'm blaming him for everything that's wrong with the team. I'm not doing that. But seeing as this thread is about Lou, I feel compelled to voice my opinion about him. Had the thread been "Trade Ramirez" or "Fire Hendry", I would have done likewise. Lou isn't the sole reason the Cubs suck, but he is a big part of it. His senile old grandpa act has worn thin.

Third, I was all for the Lou hiring when it went down. Since then, I've been disappointed, much the same way I was with Dusty (who I was also glad we signed at the time). Every year since he was brought on, my disappointed has increased. I'm at the point now where I just wanna see him disappear.

Fourth, if you look at my post, quoted in this post, you'll see a sentence where I used the words "is misguided" twice. One of them doesn't make sense. What happened there? Why did I type those words twice? I did that at school, so drugs weren't a factor. What was I thinking?

I don't want to really get into it again today, but I just want to make clear what irks me the most which is this: People are complaining because Lou is old, senile, and can't manage anymore at the age of 66 when we all loved him, thought he was doing well, and he even won the manager of the year award when he was 64. It just seems inconsistent to me. I would say it's maybe even misguided to think that is misguided.

And I'm not saying he IS old and senile, only that that's the way he appears. And I've always felt this way about him, but when he was winning (in the regular season, not the post season) it didn't bother me as much. I don't think Lou is old or senile either. I've always liked the dude and before this year, I would've nutted up if someone suggested firing him. But he's got to go. Like now. You can see it in his eyes and it's nothing short of quiet resignation. He fills out the lineup card, makes pitching changes but mentally, he's in retirement mode. He's burned out or just dumbfounded by the way the Cubs have played. Who knows how that affects the players. If Lee and Ramirez were hitting, he'd probably have a vastly different demeanor. And yeah, he does get too much of the blame and he surely isn't the biggest problem, but he also aint helping much. It sucks, but that's baseball. Sometimes the manager needs to be the sacrificial lamb. Nothing personal, Lou but you need to be fired.

This sums up my thoughts pretty well except for the part about always liking him. I never warmed up to the idea of Lou managing this team, even through much of the winning, but it had nothing to do with his demeanor. He always appeared to be a hard-ass version of Dusty and nothing more, at least to me anyway.

Rob Neyer of ESPN was talking about the D-Backs managerial situation today, and it sounded like it came directly from this thread. I think the thoughts are somewhat universal:

QUOTE The biggest problem is the bullpen ... which is good news! Because the easiest thing to fix is the bullpen. Even if the Diamondbacks do nothing, the bullpen will improve. (because bullpen pitchers fluctuate up and down so much) Unfortunately, there aren't any other quick fixes available, as the Diamondbacks' Triple-A roster seems bereft of power arms.

Well, there's one quick fix (maybe): Fire the manager!

I don't type those words lightly. A.J. Hinch seems like an intelligent fellow, and I'm not blaming the Diamondbacks' struggles this season or last on him. But Kendrick (the GM) goes out of his way to absolve Hinch, which seems odd considering that if the manager has a great deal of power over one thing on the club, it's probably the bullpen. He might not choose the relievers he's got, but he does decide how they're used. Isn't it fair to suggest that a different manager might be getting more out of his relievers than Hinch has gotten?
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

So it doesn't bother you at all that the Neyer's first paragraph and his last paragraph completely contradict each other? If they don't do anything the bullpen will get better because bullpen pitchers are all over the place. But the one thing managers can control are the bullpen pitchers.

I like Neyer, but that doesn't make a lick of sense.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

I haven't changed my tune, his in game decisions and lineup management have been piss poor since he got here.

Thing is...you never tell us which decisions or lineups are bad. You just pass along these global critiques, which are basically just form without substance.

The best way to be seen as an expert is to be a critic...

The final paragraph seems to be more hypothetical than anything. You have to admit that managers vary greatly as far as managing their pens, but unless all of their relievers suck or all are effective, then a manager can actually have a great deal of impact on how a pen performs overall. In our case, the pen has been a mixed bag, but Lou should have some idea as to who he can count on and who he cannot.
