<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Shelton State pitcher signs with Cubs
Published: Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 3:30 a.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:04 p.m. TUSCALOOSA | Trey McNutt, who established himself as a power pitcher during his freshman season at Shelton State Community College, has signed a pro contract with the Chicago Cubs. Shelton State coach Bobby Sprowl confirmed that McNutt, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-hander, had agreed to an offer from the Cubs, who selected him in the 32nd round of the June amateur draft. 'As far as a pro pitcher goes, he's got everything they're looking for,' Sprowl said. 'He's a big, strong kid. His arm works well, and he's got the power stuff. He's got all the attributes. It's just a matter of putting it together consistently.' McNutt pitched 69 1/3 innings as a freshman and posted a 7-2 record. Shelton State won the Alabama Community College Conference title and advanced to the JUCO World Series in Colorado. 'It was something we expected, but you never know what's going to happen,' Sprowl said of McNutt's signing. 'Trey was honest about it. I think the Cubs made him a pretty good offer. 'It's not a big blow for us. If he had been the only guy coming back (for 2010), it would have been different, but we've got so many coming back. We just have to adjust.' Sprowl said McNutt was to report to Mesa, Ariz., for a physical exam. 'The scout who signed him thinks they'll send him to Boise (Ida.),' Sprowl said. 'It's a late-season league for college kids. We're proud of him and hope he has a great future.' The Class A Boise Hawks play in the Northwest League.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd--> <!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Shelton State’s McNutt drafted by Cubs Published: Friday, June 12, 2009 at 3:30 a.m. Last Modified: Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 11:54 p.m. Trey McNutt, a freshman pitcher for Shelton State Community College, was drafted on Thursday by the Chicago Cubs. Shelton State coach Bobby Sprowl said McNutt, who is from Haleyville, was taken in the 32nd round. “He’s a power pitcher,” Sprowl said. “He probably had one of the better arms in the state. He could touch 95 (on the radar gun) and pitch consistently in the low- to mid-90s. He’s another guy who’s going to have a good future in baseball. Hopefully, we can get him back for another year, but that’s up to him.” McNutt, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-hander, pitched 69 1/3 innings this season and posted a 7-2 record. Shelton State won the Alabama Community College Conference title and advanced to the JUCO World Series in Colorado.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Think he could be talked into having "Break Ya Neck" as his intro music?

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

Word is Cashner has been added to the Iowa bullpen effective immediately.

Austin two-dads has put together a bunch of great starts after a poor start to the season. The only thing I know about him is that he moonlights as a terrible Christian singer. Scarey, do you have the scoop?

So, I just read the Cashner news via Bleacher Nation. Very odd. In the short-run this could be really good for us, but I'm starting to wonder why the switch after watching him dominate as a starter for almost 2 months. I wonder how he will deal with this, or if it matters at all to him.

What I know off the top of my head is he was in the Mariners system originally. He put up some good numbers in low A ball, but something must have happened. I know he dealt with injuries while with the Mariners. His numbers dropped off big time and he was let go and forced to play with an independent club. The Cubs saw something in him they liked and he has pitched extremely well since signing here last year. At a closer look, it seems he was drafted in the 16th round and I don't believe was signed over slot. The Mariners put him immediately into the bullpen where he had very good strikeout numbers and poor control. His injury must have forced him to reinvent himself though. He was starting games beginning in 2008 and since then his strikeouts are down a bit but his walks are WAY down. He also has a good ground-out to fly-out ratio. He's more of a finesse guy now than he was when he was first drafted. The only thing I could find on him in terms of what he throws is this page: http://www.truesportscore.com/mlbsim/playe...ayer_28092.html It shows that he throws a fastball at around 90mph along with a curve, slider, and change. The change wasn't too impressive at this time, but I'm wodering if he's worked on it enough that he can use it regularly. It would explain the reduction in strikeouts and increase in ground balls. |
