The one thing that I keep coming back to though is that this is Carlos Zambrano. Right? I just don't understand how you put an all star, no hitting, $91 mil making, 6 time opening day starting, 200 inning throwing, pitcher who I believe has never had an ERA over 4, into the bullpen. I just can't get my mind around that.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And all so that Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny can remain in the rotation.

What a shock today!
Hell, it's worth a shot. Lou is showing he will do anything to win, and how nice will it be to bring on Zambrano for 3 to 5 innings if one of our starters implode?
It might effect pinch hitting late in the game though as they might keep Z in since he can swing the bat and go long in tight ball games.
Z is still a good pitcher but this brings back memories of Baker tinkering with Wood and Prior.

This doesn't work unless you are OK with a lefthander being your 8th inning guy. Because if it's not Gorz, then they really haven't solved anything.
If not Gorz, then I suppose it has to be Silva. But taking Silva out of the rotation before he shows his true colors (which I assume he will eventually do), seems a bit insane as well (tonights perfomance backs that up).
Wells is young (PT wise) and still learning his way around being a starter in the majors. I would not want to move him out.
Every arguement that has been used against Zambrano applies to Dempster as well, except that I think Dempster is better than Zambrano.
I would probably move Gorz to the pen, but that really doesn't do anything to solve the 8th inning problems we've had. I'd still do it, but I can see why Lou/Rothschild would prefer Zambrano. And again, it's not like we traded Zambrano away. We made what is, in all likelyhood, a temporary move that will last until ANYBODY in the pen steps up.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

It really amazes me this is getting this much discussion. It is a horrible decision period. If this team is going to make the playoffs it will be by the narrowest of margins, this team needs its most valuable players playing as much as possible so they can have the most impact if it is going to be able to make the playoffs, this moves takes away playing time from a more valuable player and gives it to less valuable players, therefore it is a bad move.

As a starter Zambrano will only have an impact on 30-35 games. If he is a reliever the rest of the season he could potentially have an impact on 60-70 games.

This move is in all likelihood a very short-term move, and it makes the most sense of any of the moves they could have made. Gorzelanny wasn't a very good reliever (much like Jason Marquis), and Silva is in that same mold. Dempster was moved back into the rotation because he wans't consistent in high-stress, short appearances. Wells is too young and too successful to move to the pen. Lilly is returning to start. That leaves Zambrano. If he's OK'ed it, he proabably understands it's a short-term deal to help the team win... and good for him. Not a lot of $90M players would take one for the team quietly.
Lou hasn't lost his senses, he's doing the best he can to get his dreadfully underachieving team to win some games. I'm glad he did something to try to stimulate a few wins.
