Do any members of our SOI legal staff know anything about baseball contracts? Do the contracts explicitly state that the payment given to a player is for services rendered playing baseball?

What I'm asking is, could they Cubs still get some use out of Silva by employing him as their highest-paid vendor? Or perhaps as safety netting in case of future episodes of concrete falling from the underside of the upper deck?

Beyond a door stop or paper weight, I can't think of any role Silva can fulfill which would aid the Cubs.

Anyone want to put a guess on the injury which puts Silva on the DL.

Did anyone ever think that this would be a "fun" season? Did anyone actually look at our roster stacked next to teams like the Phillies and Yankees and say, "Yea, we're right there."

The answers to those two questions should be no.

You mean the roster that really wasn't too different from a team that won 97 games 2 years ago? Injuries and about everybody outside of Lee and Lilly performing worse than expected killed this team last year. And still, they won 83 games with most everything going wrong. We're not in the AL East. We're not in the NL East. If you get in, you have a chance.

We weren't a young team 2 years ago and we're an old team now. There is a huge difference between 2008 and 2010. Dempster had a career year which cannot be expected. Marmol was the best reliever in baseball. Wood was more than adequate as a closer. Aramis actually stayed healthy (for the most part). We got real lucky with Jimmy Baseball Now we have an injured Lilly, an erratic Marmol, no lights out set up guy, an aging and inury prone roster, Z has progressively gotten worse.

While the players may be similar the skills aren't. So I've decided to just enjoy the baseball season with no expectations for success for the Cubs. I'll be a much happier guy and my family will appreciate it.

That's the team I mean. That team that got their asses totally kicked in their last 2 playoff attempts.

I don't give a damn about winning 90+ games in the regular season--I care about the post-season.

I hope this team proves me wrong.

Bleh, fuck 2 years. You don't go from the best offense in the league and amazing numbers left and right to blah shitheads 2 years later. We've had bad breaks, that's the bottom line.

Dempster was still very good last year. He gave up too many hits, especially ones that went over the fence. But the rest of his numbers are pretty much in line with the 08 season and show it wasn't a complete "fluke".

Marmol can still be that good as we saw yesterday. He's just gotta get his head on straight and throw the ball near the fucking plate because his stuff is so good, it would make a nun cum. He was even better the year before.

Injuries have never been a huge issue with Aramis. Why should we expect it to be a big problem with him this year? And his OPS in 08 was the worst it's been in the last 6 years.

Jim Edmonds was terrific, but we win the division easily without him anyway that year.

Zambrano had a better ERA last year than the previous 2 years, he won at least 13 games the previous 6 years, his strikeout numbers are the best they've been aside from 2006, and Lou's said how he's already throwing the ball better than he's ever seen.

I'm not even saying you're wrong with any of this, I'm just saying it's not crazy to see some of these things go our way.

And yes, I realize I'm the asshat that started this thread. I'm all over the place with this team. I still see us being better than last year regardless, but if it doesn't include a title, it's not anywhere close to good enough.

I'd like to think that we can't string together another unbroken chain of bad luck, shit-headedness and suckitude like last season. But as far as I'm concerned, we can not go to the post-season and it still could be good enough. There are lots of things I can see this season that will make me happy even if we don't go to the playoffs. Does Lou have fire in his belly? Whether he does or doesn't, what sense do we get of who's managing the club in 2011? How is Ricketts impacting the franchise? How are our young players coming along? Was the Byrd deal good? Was the Jaramillo deal good? Are we just riding out back-loaded contracts or are we building the future a piece at a time as we go along?

Don't get me wrong. I would love a run deep into the post-season but I'm not going to call anything short of that failure.

The problem with expectations, is that they can't be met until the end of the season, but can be shot down at any bump in the road along the way. Nobody needs to be all doom and gloom, but I would avoid expectations as much as possible.

That being said, this team is going to win at least 85 games. They should be in contention for a playoff spot.
I like you guys a lot.

I wasn't expecting much out of this season anyway. At the same time though, even after being injured and mediocre as hell, this team was in 1st place until the first week of last August, so anything is possible with a little luck and good health. I won't hold my breath though.

I won't accept anything other than a title when it's been over 100 years. 08 was every bit as much of a failure as 09.

If you told me right now that my choices for 2010 were:

(1) Guaranteed World Series appearance and loss, or

(2) Take your chances with whatever is going to happen for this team

I'd take number 1 without hesitation. Is that bad?
