Guzman underwent an MRI on his shoulder on Friday after complaining of discomfort. He had not thrown off the mound this spring.
It's been a difficult few months for Guzman, 28, who injured his right knee running in Venezuela, then five days later, lost his brother, who was shot to death in Caracas on Jan. 11. Guzman, who has been recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, had yet to throw off the mound this spring.
"You just feel terrible for the kid," Hendry said. "Right when he has success and has great stuff, something has gone wrong. We were very pleased with his throwing in January. It's a shame.
"At one time, this guy was as good a prospect as [Carlos Zambrano] in the system," Hendry said of Guzman, whose career has been slowed by shoulder and elbow injuries. "It just seems like it's been one thing after another. He's had some success the last couple years with well-above-average stuff and was capable of pitching at any point in the game for you."
Guzman is trying to decide his options. The surgical approach is unpredictable. Guzman could take a more conservative route of treatment to strengthen the shoulder, and that would require four to six weeks of exercises. Then, he'd have to start all over again.
This injury is related to the soreness he had at the end of last season near his right armpit, which prompted the Cubs to shut Guzman down on Sept. 22.
Guzman was projected to handle late-inning relief this season and was a candidate for the setup job. Last year was his best, as he appeared in a career-high 55 games, compiling a 2.95 ERA.
The Cubs were already looking for a veteran right-handed setup pitcher to complement lefty John Grabow and bridge the gap to closer Carlos Marmol. Right now, Esmailin Caridad is projected to fill that role.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

From what I have been seeing and hearing, Caridad will be the new right handed setup man. So that is one less arm in the battle for the two open bullpen spots. Samardzija will likely get one of them and maybe Stevens. Samardzija has recently discovered a curve ball. That would help him in his outings. Stephens may be the stretch, but he or Berg may get the nod for that extra spot which would have gone to Caridad

The Blanco play was weird. He wasn't spiked...hell, he wasn't touched. Looked more like he slid his knee into the bag.

No to Cashner.
I dont think the best thing for hsi career is to rush him to the majors. He still needs a little development.
Caridad will now, effectively, slide into the right handed setup slot to compliment Grabow who is on the leftside.
That is three of the seven slots in Piniella's overloaded bullpen (I for one like the extra bat on the bench over the extra arm in the pen). We have four spots.
Marshall will likely lose out to Gorz. for the lefty in the rotation and be in the Pen.
That brings us to three spots.
Count Samardzija out (at least I hope to God we can), because he should beat out Fatass Silva for the 5th starter. Silva can go away.
Still at three spots.
Gray has an ouchy groin, so he is likely being slowed and may not be ready for opening day. If he is, down to two. If not, our bullpen sits at three open.
Berg, Stevens, Gaub are the three top names I would look at.
But Blake Parker is another interesting name to watch as he looked good last year in Triple A. he had a 3.00 ERA in 45 games and 51 innings while posting a 1.2 WHIP and a 58-27 K-BB average with 3 hit batters. He also only allowed three HR. He also pitched well in Double A.
The more I look at his stats, I like this Parker kid.

Quite an interesting find, this Blake Parker. I would have to assume the person talking him up would be some sort of genius... or at least good looking.

I think they should just announce a seat number before the beginning of each game to select today's guest middle reliever. Either that or have WGN do the arrows thing...just like selecting contestants for the Grand Prize Game on Bozo's Circus. I'd give anything to hear Brenly say "Oh, I think we've got a mom...yes, it's a mom...Ringmaster Ned, IF YOU PLEASE!"

Our pen is pretty much shambles right now. Obviously I wouldn't want to give up the farm for a reliever, but I think we need someone who can be consistent and has experience. Right now from the right side, its pretty much Marmol and a bunch of young guys with little to no experience. I don't have a problem with giving a couple spots to our young guys, but right now it would be like 4 spots.
