Why would he go off of them?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I wish he wouldn't have.

His career trajectory makes no sense, none whatsoever. If something doesn't make sense, there's usually a reason behind it. I'm fairly certain PEDs are the cause of his strange path.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

That can be explained by his weight loss and subsequent increase in bat speed.

What doesn't make sense is why he would wait till they started buckling down on PEDs to start using them and why he would abruptly stop using them after obvious success.

You don't go from being a poor minor leaguer to be a ROY by losing a little weight, it's really that simple to me. He had help.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Why did he stop?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
You'd have to ask him.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Do you know of a reasonable explanation why he would stop after getting away with it for 2 years?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Maybe his noots fell off.

Or just disappeared - continued shrinking to oblivion.

Soto's problem was the league figured him out. He is going to have power and he is going to walk. Considering the number of AB's his power and patience were fine. The problem is, he pulls off of everything away, he has both years. He is going to strikeout and weakly ground out a shit ton with a low batting average, unless he makes major adjustments, I doubt that's going to change. If he stays healthy I expect 15-20 HR and solid OBP though.

Exactly.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Furthermore, with an average BABIP last year, his OBP would have been huge. Slugging wouldn't have been too bad either.

I also think its worth noting that Soto hit .109 with 0 HR in April, his stats just never rebounded, especially after missing 6 weeks with injury. From that time on, he hit .245 with 11 HR, 45 RBI and a .760 OPS in 285 ABs. Not all-star caliber, but certainly not terrible. I think thats the Soto we can expect. I know you can't throw out the terrible month, blah blah, but considering he was solid the rest of the last 2 years I think its safe to say it was an anomaly.

Last year, despite his struggles, he struck out less and swung and missed less than he did in 2008.

I'm pretty sure Soto is going to be a part time player by the end of the year.

At the end of the year you will be pwned again. To be clear I don't think Soto is going to hit .285 with 30 HR. But he will be the starting catcher and hit .265 with 20 HR provided he remains healthy.

To put it another way, if Soto stays healthy...no one <i>reasonable </i>will be talking about Hendry going out to find another catcher.

I'm not the biggest Soto supporter, but I think he will hit around .250-.260 ba / .340-.350 obp with 12-18 hr and 60-70 rbi. I would take that any day of the week from a catcher, as long as he doesn't become a defensive liability. He calls a pretty good game and handles our staff well too, so I can live with him.

Let me throw this out there, it's not that I don't want to like Soto, it's that I don't trust him. His career path does not make sense, it does not pass the smell test IMO. Could he bounce back and have a good year/career? Sure, why not? Could he be a one hit wonder with a sketchy track record? You bet ya. I just don't feel right about him, never have.

I'm telling you Lieutenant...this guy is wrong. I like him for this murder. Just let me get him in the box. (Where's my phone book).
