QUOTE Coco Crisp is nearing an agreement with the Athletics on a one-year deal in the $5MM range, MLBTR has learned. The deal will include an option for 2011. Crisp had been talking to the Padres as well, and his agent Steve Comte expected a decision before Christmas.

Crisp, 30, tallied only 215 plate appearances with the Royals this year due to shoulder injuries. He had surgery on both shoulders during the summer and plans to be ready for Spring Training.

So, this kind of fucks us.

Wanna outbid the A's for him?

I just can't believe a guy coming off an injury shortened year with surgeries on both shoulders got $5M guaranteed, and what it means to a healthy guy like Byrd.

Now, I assume that Rick Ankiel is healthy and that 2009 stats are an anomaly so his 2007 and 2008 stats are a better indicator of what he can do which is a huge assumption.

Rick bats lefty which was the only thing the Cubs supposedly looked for in the last offseason so he aids in the Cubs effort to become more left handed.

Rick is an inexpensive, 1 year option so it's not like we would need to commit to him for multiple seasons or big dollars.

He has some power 15 - 20 HRs, slugging above 500. Sure it may be HGH enhanced but does anyone really care?

He has a cannon of an arm in the outfield.

The Cubs had some big luck the last time they signed an inexpensive, PED rumored, ex-Cardinal CF in 2008 so why not see if lightening can strike twice?

Rick was never my No. 1 choice but, if healthy, he is the better of the remaining free agent options.

Fuck Ankiel. I will be sooooooo fucking pissed if we sign him. Seriously, who keeps voting for him?

Considering what is available, I would be just fine with Ankiel in RF. Not sure if he's any better in CF than Fuk.

I'm seriously going to be pissed if we sign Podsednik. I really hope its just beat writers throwing possibilities out there that is fueling these rumors because seriously, pull up the fucking tape...he CANNOT play CF. He can barely play LF.

The only interest I would have in Ankiel is if he wants to get back on the mound.

Anyone have an interest in Brett Gardner from the Yankees? They have a surplus of CF'ers now. He could be alright and come cheap. Left handed top of the order guy with great speed. He hits better against lefties though and was better away from Yankee stadium. Could serve time with Johnson.

I don't know much about him, any thoughts?

Explain. I just haven't seen much of him. The last I remember is that he had won the everyday CF job out of ST last year, but then he was nothing special all season.

I'd like to make one thing clear. Ellsbury does not equal Fuld. I don't understand why people on this board put him in the 4th OFer category. Makes no sense to me.

Not only did he steal 70 bases, he was only caught 12 times. To contrast, Theriot was caught 10 times in only 31 attempts. He hit .301 with and OBP of .355. He's also pretty good at a strong defensive position.

I don't love Brett Gardner but he'd be useful as a left handed hitting platoon mate in CF. He plays a strong CF and gets on base a decent clip. He stolen base percentage is al\so quite good.

I don't think anyone's making Ellsbury out to be a 4th outfielder. I think Coach is just trying to say that he's not as god-like as he's made out to be. The guy has only gotten on base at a .350 clip. Don't get me wrong, I like .350 OBP. It's just not good enough for the hype that Ellsbury gets.

Now, the stolen base ability is quite an asset. But, I think you have to guage the realistic value of stolen bases. I think it can be very helpful but again is over hyped.

I've said it before, but I really would be fine with Fuld in center as half of a platoon. That being said, I would be happy to bring Gardner in. We could do much worse than Melky as well. Do the Cubs have anything the Yankees need?

Do they still need bullpen arms? I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what the Yanks' needs are.
