Bradley
QUOTE Besides, it's not just that he poisoned Bradley throughout baseball. He also poisoned him to the Cub fans. He has a 3 year deal. We're paying no matter what. Lots and lots of money. Look at Bradley's career stats. He'll have an odd bad year, then go off on a tear for the next two or three years.

HENDRY DIDN'T POISON BRADLEY, BRADLEY POISONED HIMSELF!

it was bradley ripping cub fans in the media, it was bradley ripping the cubs organization is the media, it was bradley saying his teammates didn't like him in the media. it wasn't hendry, it was bradley. you have to get this straight in your mind.

That many GM's.

No, I'm not asking how many GMs would deal with Bradley (your answer, by the way, shows Hendry isn't some lone lunatic). How many GM's are going to base what they give the Cubs back in return on whether the opposing GM is saying nice things or mean things about the player? You think someone trading for Bradley isn't going to be doing their due dilligence? You think they aren't going to ask players in the clubhouse about him and find out EXACTLY how they feel about Bradley? You think if Hendry just acts like nothing is wrong (and I'm sure if he did that no one would give him shit about letting the inmates run the asylum), the opposing team is just going to assume everything is hunky dory? It's absurd.

About as absurd as the idea that Cub fans were OK with Bradley exactly up to the point that Hendry suspended him.

That question doesn't even make sense. He's on thin ice in Chicago because of what he did last season and what he had to say about the Cubs and the fans. What does that have to do with any other team? No other team has to forgive him. They just have to get past the history, not mend fences.

BT, I agree with you that teams do due diligence. I was just pointing out that what Hendry did was WAY out of the ordinary. I literally can't think of another example in baseball history when the GM kicked a star player off the team in the middle of a pennant race just because he was pissed of at him. (There may be another of example of this. I just can't think of one, although the Padilla/Rangers thing last year was similar).

And BT, I'm like you when it comes to Hendry; I'm much closer to the middle of the spectrum than the extreme side that tom seems to think. Jim has his good and bad points, like all GM's do. I admit that I lean toward the side that thinks we could get someone better, and you probably lean toward the side that thinks he's doing the best job he can, and he's had some bad luck.

But I don't hate any Cub, or Cub employee.
That said, Jim is coming off a calendar year that might be the worst of his career; it's truly been a bad 12 months. So yeah, he'll get questioned for poor performance, just like Bradley did for his poor performance.

Frankly, I'd like to see them both have stellar years next season.

No. I truly believed we were out of it.
But tom and quite a few others in this thread keep mentioning that we had a chance, so I thought perhaps I'd go along with what the prevailing feeling was.

This is totally off topic, but you know who I think is the most important person in the entire Cub organization right now? Alfonso Soriano.
If he's truly done, and last year, he looked fucking hideous, we are in deep trouble, as a team.
If, however, he was injured, and the combo of his pride and a healthy body make him a good player once again, that will be a huge thing for us.

Well, in '08 I did the opposite.
The truth is, there are many ways to build a team, but Jim and I are pretty far apart on the ideal way. So he'll never be my favorite choice, but as long as the Cubs are in the playoffs, my bitching is really at a minimum. And with the payroll we have, I believe that, like the Yankees and Red Sox, we should be in the playoffs pretty much every year.

Like I've said numerous times, 2008 was perhaps my favorite baseball season of my adult life. I quietly watched, in wonder and awe.

Then why so many presumed trade suitors for him?

So...you're saying that teams don't look at the emotional track record of a potential player?

Because, I think you're wrong.

No. That's not what I'm saying.

What I'm saying is that Cubs fans are generally pissed off at him. I'm saying that this may be something that can be smoothed over to some degree before opening day. I'm saying that the gloves will come off FAST in Chicago at the slightest sign of the 2009 headcase issues. The fan/press/management fuse will be shorter or longer depending on his performance but the sword of Damoclese will be over his head.

He has baggage wherever he winds up but this part of it will be acute if he stays in Chicago in a way it won't be if he plays elsewhere.
