I must really be in the minority. The Prestige had just about the stupidest fucking "twist" I have EVER seen. The performances were great, but what a total and complete fucking copout the ending was.

SPOILERS

If I remember correctly, wasn't the big twist "he did it with magic"? Except instead of actually saying "magic", they made up some bullshit about Tesla inventing a machine that creates replicas of people? Am I remembering that right? And you guys don't find that to be a huge load of shit?<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I thought it was brilliant. The fact that he has to kill the "copy" every time he does the trick adds a completely new and complex layer -- and I think he even says something like, "I never know if it's going to be me...or the copy that goes in the tank." Something about that is totally creepy to me. I didn't think it was a copout at all. And there are some clues dropped early on and scattered throughout that the story is leading to something like that -- so it isn't entirely out of the blue.

Nope. Not a huge load of shit at all. If they didn't "earn" it, then I would've been pissed, but I didn't have a problem with it at all. I would recommend a second viewing, BT, if you haven't already.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

It doesn't matter at all to me that they dropped clues, it's still a copout. Look, it's very well acted and directed, and there are some good ideas. But I look at it like this. Here is a mystery movie I came up with. Tell me what you think of it:

A woman is found murdered in a locked room. The windows and doors are locked from the inside, and there are no vents to crawl in an out. How did the murder kill her and get out?

Solution? He invented a magical machine which can transport him in and out of locked rooms. The end.

Satisfying "mystery"? Of course not. It doesn't matter how well I direct that movie, or how well it's acted or how much foreshadowing is put it, in the end, it's bullshit. It's Deus Ex Machina to the 10th degree. I can admire the craftsmanship of "The Prestige", but ultimately I have to dismiss it because it cheats.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It isn't a Deus Ex Machina, though. You know that he's going to visit Bowie to make a magic machine -- that element is already introduced. "The Transported Man" secret is already revealed -- Batman uses his twin (and the twins have been living their lives as a single person -- which shows how committed to his craft he is (and how nuts he is)). The only thing the other dude can do is take it a step further...

We aren't going to agree here, but you see it as a copout and I don't. And I don't even think the Tesla machine is the true payoff -- it's that Batman has been sharing his life (his wife, his family, etc.) with his twin brother (which is an echo of the bird trick, and the magic show that the Chinese magician puts on).

Very early in the movie, Batman's butler is showing the lawyer (I think it's a lawyer) the Tesla machine. And he flat out says, "This machine isn't a magic trick. It creates real magic." I'm screwing up the quote, but it's there.

It isn't as if they spring it on you out of the blue. Hell -- in the opening credits, they even drop a clue about it.

The only thing I can say, if you haven't already, is try watching it again.

And if you still don't like it, then all I can say...is eat a dick.

Final thought -- even if you feel that the director/writer didn't earn the twist...

You knew going into the movie that it was a movie about magicians, right? So...you're pissed that the twist involved actual magic? Did you think it was a documentary? It isn't like Denzel Washington popping up at the end of Malcolm X after getting shot up and saying, "Surprise, motherfuckers! IT'S MAGIC!"

I've got to agree with Butch on every point, especially the eating a dick part. This isn't some Shyamalan movie where the twist is a desperate attempt to deceive or where it changes the entire film in light of it. It enhances the story, and it fits neatly into the plot as well. What better ending could there have been?

Love the Prestige. It wasn't a mystery, BT. That was never the point. And even what little mystery there was supposed to be, it was about how Bale's character did it, not how Jackman's character did it.

to put it politely, bullshit. OF COURSE it was a mystery. If it wasn't a mystery, if it was totally about the lengths these 2 would go to show each other up, then they would have shown Jackman's plan all along. The reason they DON'T show you his plan, the reason they DON'T reveal what he is doing, the reason they are vague about the Tesla, is because they want you to guess how he is doing it. It doesn't matter that the movie wasn't a "mystery". It contained mysteries. And the answer to the Jackman mystery was bullshit. Which leads me to

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->You knew going into the movie that it was a movie about magicians, right? So...you're pissed that the twist involved actual magic? Did you think it was a documentary?<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Are you serious? This is EXACTLY why the fact that it involved actual magic is such complete and utter horseshit. How can you guys not understand this? The whole idea behind "magic" is the audience is dared to figure out how the magician can appear to perform magic. Do you honestly think people go to see Chris Angel because they want to see a guy float? Of course not. They go because they want to see if they can figure out how he is doing it. So to spend the whole movie trying to figure out how the magician is performing the illusion of magic, only to be told at the end, "oh yeah, it's really magic", is bullshit.

Butch you keep defending the process by which they reached the end. I don't care about that. The end itself is the problem. I understand why you guys liked the movie, and it's fine if the end didn't ruin it for you. But none of that takes away from the fact that the end was bullshit.

I don't get it though, are you seriously criticizing a movie about magic as being unrealistic or far-fetched? It wasn't as if I expected it to be 100% based on the tenets of natural science. Were you expecting a docudrama? What am I missing here? I was entertained and in no way did I feel duped or cheated.

But beets, you knew how Jackman was doing for like the last 45 minutes of the movie. It wasn't like there was this whole huge buildup of, "oh man, how is Jackman doing it?" You knew he was doing it with the machine. You just didn't know exactly WHAT the machine was doing. And THAT revelation was powerful.

Why is it you nutholes boil every movie down to the binary that every movie is either:

A: about magic

Or

B: A Documentary

I was not expecting a documentary. I was not expecting a docudrama. I was not expecting zombies. I was not expecting shark attacks. I was not expecting Stuka dive bombers. There were lots of things I wasn't expecting.

And the movie, until the horseshit ending, was NOT about magic. It was about magicians. There is a HUGE difference. The movie goes to great lengths to show how Bale pulls off his trick in a manner consistent with real world physics, however unlikely it is. There was nothing whatsoever that hinted this movie was about "magic", rather than the process by which 2 men pull off illusions, until the magic Tesla machine pops up. The magic Tesla machine is entirely inconsistent with anything else that has happened in the rest of the movie. That's why it stands out. If the movie had been titled "Merlin vs. Gandalf", I would be reacting in an entirely different fashion.

Conversely, if the answer to the riddle of "how are both of these guys pulling off this magic trick" ended with the answer "oh, they both have magical powers", wouldn't that be the dumbest fucking thing you've ever heard?

Maybe my memory is a bit fuzzy, but Tesla's machine (or at least the concept of it anyway) doesn't just appear at the very end does it?
