Our farm system
#1
Scarey asked me to post this in the baseball forum.
This list, by minor-league guru John Sickels, is a year old, so a lot has likely changed. And it's just one man's opinion. Some of you guys know a lot more than me about our farm players, so I'd like to get your opinions.

How would you rank our top 10 now, after the '09 season?

Chicago Cubs Top 20 Prospects for 2009

Chicago Cubs Top 20 Prospects for 2009

1) Josh Vitters, 3B, Grade B+: Hopefully the home run power should start to come in 2009. Great contact hitting skills and still very young.
2) Jeff Samardzija, RHP, Grade B: I have no idea what to expect here. Could be great, could be horrible, track record very erratic.
3) Ryan Flaherty, SS, Grade B: Looks like a solid all-around player to me.
4) Andrew Cashner, RHP, Grade B-: High ceiling due to fastball and slider, command issues may slow progress.
5) Hak-Ju Lee, SS, Grade B-: Scouting reports look great, but want to see some numbers before ranking higher.
6) Jay Jackson, RHP, Grade B-: I LOVE this guy…good athlete, former philosophy major, throws hard, throws strikes, great pro debut. I think he is underrated by other sources.
7) Tyler Colvin, OF, Grade C+: Still worried about his plate discipline.
8) Welington Castillo, C, Grade C+: Good glove, hits well in flashes, maybe a Miguel Olivo type?
9) Dae-Eun Rhee, RHP, Grade C+: Would rank higher if not for Tommy John.
10) Aaron Shafer, RHP, Grade C+: Wichita State product with sharp command. Elbow injury cost him velocity.
11) Starlin Castro, SS, Grade C+: Intriguing toolsy infielder had strong AZL debut. A sleeper.
12) Junior Lake, SS, Grade C+: Intriguing toolsy infielder had strong AZL debut. A sleeper.
13) Dan McDaniel, RHP, Grade C+: Lots of strikeouts and grounders at Boise. Command an issue. Could rank as high as 10th.
14) Micah Hoffpauir, 1B, Grade C: Too old to rank higher but he has a major league bat. Where does he play?
15) Esmailin Caridad, RHP, Grade C: Low strikeout rate a concern, but I think he can do well in relief.
16) Don Veal, LHP, Grade C: Stock has fallen massively due to command and mechanical issues. Not protected for Rule 5, which tells you a lot.
17) Josh Kroeger, OF, Grade C: He finally learned some plate discipline and has done well in Triple-A. Getting old for a prospect.
18) Tony Thomas, 2B, Grade C: Strike zone judgment collapsed in Florida State League.
19) Chris Carpenter, RHP, Grade C: Command problems and poor health record reduce stock, but he throws very hard and has upside if he can stay away from doctors.
20) Mitch Atkins, RHP, Grade C: Possibly a fifth starter type if he can sharpen command more.

My personal top 20:

1. Josh Vitters 3B
2. Starlin Castro SS
3. Andrew Cashner SP
4. Hak-Ju Lee SS
5. Jay Jackson SP
6. Brett Jackson CF
7. Christopher Carpenter SP
8. Dae-Eun Rhee SP
9. Chris Archer SP
10. Casey Coleman SP
11. Kyler Burke RF
12. Ryan Flaherty 2B
13. Logan Watkins 2B
14. Blake Parker RP
15. John Gaub RP
16. DJ LeMahieu 2B
17. Chris Huseby RP
18. Tyler Colvin OF
19. Darwin Barney SS
20. Jeff Stevens RP

This will probably be close to BAs top 20, but they value tools more and I think Castro will be ahead of Vitters and they seem pretty high on Brett Jackson so he could be #3 or #4. Also, I don't expect Parker and Gaub to be that high as they aren't too impressed with relief pitching prospects.

All in all, I think it's a pretty solid group.

No room for Huseby?

Edit - saw him.

Just wondering if because he's a RP, there's less love?
I got nothin'.

That and the injury history. I think he could be a lights out closer if he stays healthy. Hell, they may try starting him again next year, and there's a good reason they gave him a 1.3 mill bonus.

He just needs one more healthy season of pitching to move up into the top 10 IMO. He could be our best pitching prosepect if he goes back to starting.

Cerda was the little kid that was involved the Little League drama many years back correct? Is he still a shrimp and does he still catch?

Andy, it's an unfair game. Lefties will always be more valuable than righties, both as pitchers and as batters. Them's the breaks.

I like your list, Scarey. The biggest disappointment would seem to be Ryan Flaherty. Did he just have a terrible season or something?

He was still catching up until constructs just recently. He's been moved to second base indefinitely. He's actually a well thought of hitter but he broke his hamate bone so it has really set him back. I'm hopeful he'll be up there in these lists some day soon.

A bit disappointing yes. It looks like he's not going to be able to stick at SS so that takes him down a notch. Also, from what I've been told he has had a very unlucky year. He had a very low BABIP with a decent line drive % meaning he was hitting the ball right at defenders. He had a pretty good second half and ended up finishing at .276/.344/.470. Really a pretty good line, but I think a lot of people had expectations of finishing in AA by the end of the year. He didn't even make it up to A+ because of his early season struggles and he turned 22 years old in July.

If he starts in AA next year and does well, he'll be right back in the thick of things. He did have a mediocre season, but his drop on my list has more to do with the high production from the other guys above him.

It seems like we're awash in shortstops, which is a great thing. They should just move Flaherty to 2B, and be done with it...that's where he'll end up anyway.

I tend to agree with you because we have so many shortstops. Second base was a log jam before with Josh Harrison, but now that he was traded away, we could use Flaherty there.

I don't know that I want to give up on Flaherty at SS that quickly though. They put him at second a lot this year, but I've heard from scouts that some think he would be adequate enough at shortstop to be a utility infielder. It doesn't hurt to keep him sharp defensively.

I see your point Scarey, but it seems kind of disappointing that a guy who was our #3 prospect is being groomed to be a Cedeno-like utility guy. Second base seems to be a pretty difficult position to learn, especially with turning the DP, so it seems like, if that's his future, he needs to get as many reps at that position as possible.

I hope he can become an every day player, but it's a good idea to have a backup plan for prospects. If Flaherty doesn't turn out to be quite good enough to be in the lineup every day, it would be nice to know he can sub in at multiple positions.

I'm not saying I expect him to be a backup utility type. I have fairly high hopes for Flaherty. He's a middle infielder that bats left handed with power. He has huge upside!

I'm not saying that Flaherty is not still a prospect...

I know it's typical for every fan to overrate his own team's prospects, but that top five looks pretty decent. The only problem is that Castro and Lee are really young (teenagers, right?) and won't be able to help the big-league club till probably 2013 or something.

BTW, I bet that instead of moving Vitters to 1st, we end up moving Aramis to 1st.
