1969: We went from 8 1/2 games up to 8 games back at the end of the season. That's a 16 1/2 game swing.
2009: We went from tied for first to 7 back in just 15 days (I think). I know it'll never compare with blowing a big divisional lead but can we drop as many games in the standings as fast or faster?

'69 is worse--doesn't matter if we lose every game from here on out.
I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

Oh, I know. I'm just wondering if this team has it in 'em to drop as many games as fast as that.

No comparison. The '69 team was the class of the division for most of the season. The '09 team has not been viewed as the best team in the NL for most of the season and have played terribly for good portions of the season.

We can easily be 10-12 games out and in 3rd place by the end of the season, if that is what you are getting at, yes.

Even if the '09 Cubs loss every game in September and October, we can't match the disappointment of the '69 swoon.

I hope this team loses every game through the end of the season. We'll get a better draft pick -- not that we would know what the fuck to do with it...

It doesn't matter if the Cubs lose them all. It won't match '69.

Calm down now folks. I've read jstraw's post and replied that there is no comparison between the '69 and '09 teams but didn't mention the streak.
If the question is the quickest Cubs historical drop in the standings, my guess is that it parallels the longest Cubs losing streak since that was to start of the 1997 season when they went 0-14. They went from being tied for first place at Opening Day to last place but I don't know how many games back they were when they finally one a game but that assumes that you agree that all teams are tied for first to begin the season.

The sad thing is I could almost see it happening WTF happened to this team? Every team gets hit with injuries, good teams are able to adapt though. FUCK!! Hey, at least we got the Bears starting in a couple weeks.

God bless you Scarey.
And you know, I didn't take into account season-opening losing streaks.

Having lived through 69 I do not feel that will ever be exceeded as a nosedive. 2004 was torture, last year was a downer in the playoffs, but 1969 will live in infamy.

Scarey's right. People are only reading the thread title. Ultimately, the answer is not subjective. We either exceed a 16.5 game collapse or we don't. I was wondering if people think we will.
Will it be as heartbreaking if we do? Of course not...we were never dominant at any point this season. It was a struggle all along. But we fought thorough a lot of shit and were in first place on August 5th. The crap we've been taking since then has been pretty bad and could turn out to be one for the books.
