Marmol is the new closer

Who gives a shit? might as well let miles be the closer. The season is over.

Maybe this sounds crazy. But what about taking a flyer on Smoltz? Wasn't the guy really good the first couple of times through the order? Even if he sucks, at least he can't go pitch like a cy young winner again in St. Louis.

Supposedly there are a number of teams interested in Smoltz, so I doubt we'll get him. But I wouldn't mind having him. Anything would be better than Gregg at this point.

Too late on Smoltz. He wants to go to the Cards.

Is Guzman going to get a chance at being a starter next year? if not, let him be the closer.

The damage has already been done this season anyway. This is all about the future. Maybe Marmol can stop pouting about losing the closer job in ST and just focus now on throwing strikes.

Marmol leads the league in holds, and has only given up one HR all season, so I think he'll be ok, at least better than Gregg. But like Rok said, the damage is already done this season.

I agree. As wild as he's been, he's still been effective and unhittable. I praise Lou for at least shaking things up a bit.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->"I don't blame them," Gregg said. "We have to go with the hot hand right now. That's the life of my job."<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->"To me, I'm getting beat now with the home run," Gregg said. "I just looked it up on the computer and I've given up more [home runs] this year than I did extra-base hits last year. That's kind of discouraging. That's the volatility of the closer. I've pitched pretty good all year and I've had three bad games in August here."<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I don't think there is a "hot hand" right now in the pen other than Guzman. Gregg's closing days whether it's in Chicago or anywhere else are over. I'm not sure how he ever fooled anyone all this time.

Well, it's true that he's never had a propensity for giving up HRs in the past. His K numbers are really pretty good this year, and his other peripheral numbers are pretty typical for him, which is to say not bad at all. I think he has some value as a reliever based on what he has done in the past, and what I've seen this year. I really do think he is right that he is just not executing the way he needs to right now, which has lead to the HRs. He seems like a good guy, so hopefully, for his sake and the team's he will turn it around.

Gregg pitched in that cavernous shithole where the Marlins play for the last few years. Of course his homers are up now.

The dude blows. I can't wait until he's no longer a Cub.

off topic, but i just found out that aaron heilman has one year of arbitration left. that means there is a decent chance that that fuck will be a cub again next year.

I don't think it's out of the question that he could still turn his career around. His stuff is much better than Gregg's, and up until 2007 he was solid. Plus, the first year success rate of our new players isn't good.

Eh...he was never giving up HRs at that rate in the past, regardless of where he pitched. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's good, but he is a serviceable reliever for sure.

Serviceable? Sure. But I would never put him in a crucial situation again.
