I still don't understand why we couldn't have just given him a one year deal as it sounds like he would've been happy with that (I guess Hendry felt that would've been a disservice to him), but oh well. He will be missed.
From everything I've read in the press Kerry only made mention of a 1 year deal after we declined to offer arbitration to him.

I don't follow the media that closely, so I think you know more about it then me. I was just going from an article back on Nov. 14th right after the Cubs announced that Wood probably wouldn't be coming back, and a couple weeks before he was declined arbitration:
"If the Cubs had offered Wood a one-year deal, the pitcher said he would've considered it."
http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.j...sp&c_id=chc
However, just because he would "consider" it doesn't necessarily mean he would accept the offer, but my guess is that he would've, but who knows. Doesn't really matter anymore.

Well, I do think Wood would have taken a one year deal to stay with the Cubs. I just don't think that we were willing to pay what he would have had to have.
I'm not worried about Marmol... I am worried about the setup role he's leaving vacated.
Who's your daddy?

Guys, it was clear after the fact that Wood's agent never told the Cubs he would accept a 1 year deal and never informed them of that until well after the fact. And yes, 10-11 million for a RP, even for one season, is a bit much when you need to fill a corner OF hole and not downgrade anywhere else. We have salary space, but not enough for all our needs + Wood.

Any word on the size of the contract? I hope Wood gets the C.R.E.A.M. from the Tribe...

I would assume 2 years $16 mil.

The word is that it's 2yr/16m, but I don't know if that's confirmed yet.

This is the first time I've seen money mentioned.
QUOTE WEDNESDAY, 11:37am: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Indians are closing in on a two-year, $20MM deal with Wood. Jon Paul Morosi reported the same earlier today.
TUESDAY, 11:17pm: Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports Wood reached an agreement with the Indians on what is believed to be a two-year deal with a vesting option. It's unclear if Rogers is offering up new information here or just summarizing what we know.

I guess ESPN 1000 is saying 2 year, $21 mill, with option for third.
Whether it's 20 or 21 mill, that sounds better for Woody than a 16 million deal, so I'm happy for him.

I will miss Kerry a great deal and I truly wish that things could've been worked out. What can you do. I'm confident that Marmol will continue to be the Filth that he is (minus his short-lived problematic period) and hopefully Wood will have nothing but success with Cleveland. I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the AL, but I will follow him... especially when the Indians play the southside scum.

Exactly.
We have more important needs than him, despite him being the face of the team, or what you have you. Ownership can't afford everybody now, and who knows the future, so until we get someone who is willing to own the team with balls, we have to focus on our needs first.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

And, man do I hate it. What a fucking steal for the Indians.
As you all know, I disagree in basic philosophy with Hendry's mindset. But having watched him for all these years, I can almost always predict, and therefore "understand" his moves.
But this one leaves me totally baffled.

I think I can "understand" this one, even if I don't agree. Kevin Gregg is a step down, but costs substantially less. Marmol is still cheap and dominant, Samardzija is getting better. We need that money elsewhere.
Again, not saying I agree or disagree, just saying I can understand it.
Still hurts though.

Aside from the K numbers, Gregg isn't a step down, just sayin'.

$10M a season for a pitcher who throws 60 or 70 innings isn't a steal. I don't care if you're Bruce Sutter -- it's silly to pay that much money for a guy who pitches 1/3 the amount of innings that Ted Lilly does.
I hated seeing Wood go, too, but it absolutely makes sense and I completely understand it.
