Did you see this ESPN article on trades that won't be made?

Some scary contracts!

Don't know if I feel better or worse about Soriano!

If the report is true that it would take Alcides Escobar to get Washburn, I hope they do it.

If the #1 prospect in your farm system is what it takes to get someone of Washburn's caliber, I can't even begin to imagine what they want for Halladay or Lee.
I got nothin'.

Googs, I read that and had the exact same reaction; it made me embarrassed to once again have Alf's horrid contract thrown in my face. But it made me feel better to know that there are some similar (and some even worse) deals out there.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Shark needs more polish, send him back to AAA. I really like that new curveball he's showing off but he's not locating his fastball well and getting crushed. Replace him with a Sherrill, Rhodes, or Beimel please.

Couldn't agree more.

Also, Heilman should fake an injury soon and be replaced by any living organism, and I wouldn't care.

Hell, if we traded him for one of those guys it wouldn't bother me all that much.

Don't think he'd accept a trade to any of those.

We have some leverage. We can tell him he'll be playing in Iowa if he doesn't accept the trade. And besides, I bet he would accept a trade. He'd get quality MLB pitching experience for Washington, Baltimore, or Pitt. Thus making him more valuable when his contract comes up for renewal. He's the last man in the pen here in Chicago.

I know people every year hate the "It will be like trading for an All-Star" crap, but this year, I really think that's been the case for us with Aramis coming back, Soriano hitting after basically taking 2 months off out there, Harden looking like his 08 self of late rather than the #5 pitcher we've seen most of the year, Dempster returning, Soto coming back next week, etc.

The Cubs have the ability to improve more from within than any team in baseball this year and it's started to happen this month. All of those things I mentioned are bigger than any additions other teams can make. Obviously adding a Freddy Sanchez or Mark Teahen along with the a left-handed arm in the pen would be awesome, just saying. And I think we will indeed add a lefty arm in the pen.

And right as I say that, Reed's out up to a month. Shit. Go with Fukudome and Fuld? Sucks neither bats right-handed but Fuk actually had a higher batting average against lefties last year.

Kap says at least a month, broken foot.

Not sure if I missed this in another thread, but here it is:

QUOTE Cubs Rumors: Grabow, Teahen, Hermida
By Tim Dierkes [July 30 at 11:58am CST]
11:58am: ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Cubs are "strictly mining the lefthanded reliever market" and not looking for a bat.

10:51am: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports say the Cubs prefer Pittsburgh's John Grabow over Washington's Joe Beimel, and they continue to discuss the lefty reliever with the Pirates. The FOX report suggests the Cubs will stay internal for their Reed Johnson replacement.

Grabow currently ranks as a Type A free agent in the wacky world of Elias, but for his team to have a chance at draft picks they'd have to offer him arbitration and risk paying him more than $2.3MM if he accepts.

9:02am: The Cubs are looking for a left-handed hitter who can play right field, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. While they're not optimistic about a deal, the plan would be to create a platoon with the disappointing Milton Bradley. Wittenmyer says the Cubs have about $2-3MM of payroll room to work with.

Two players on the radar: Mark Teahen of the Royals and Jeremy Hermida of the Marlins. The Royals are looking for a center fielder in return, however. Teahen has $1.37MM left on his contract. Hermida has $847K remaining. Both players can be under team control through 2011. Either player would still leave some wiggle room for the Cubs to acquire a left-handed reliever.
