This movie was already mentioned in the 2012 thread, but I think it deserves its own thread. This has the makings of something pretty fucking cool. Can't find video to embed, but the new full-length trailer is out:

This. I didn't click on the initial link because I'm fucking lazy.
Like Jody said, this looks badass.

Holy shit, I just saw this today. Very good movie. I might get into greater detail and possibly a review later (don't count on it).
I will say I was expecting just some action film...a good popcorn flick, but it has a really good storyline and character development. Great pacing, didn't really lag in any parts. Some good gore/SFX.
My motto has always been the only good CGI is when you can't tell it is CGI, and this film does just that, IMO.

Watched it today.
First off, I thought it was extremely well done. Excellent movie with an original storyline. Secondly, meaning no disrespect to you lads, it was refreshing to see this sort of movie not set in the USA. I couldn't see it working otherwise. Having been to South Africa last year, I very much appreciate this movie more than what I probably would have. This movie is all about the connotations of apartheid and the after effects of that regime that is now affecting today's South African society. A look at it from a different perspective so to speak. Replace the "prawns" with native africans, especially 'foreign' blacks from countries such as Zimbabwe, Liberia etc that have illegally entered the country and basically that is what its like. Those slums exist and they are everywhere. You may have the richest area of J'burg with million 'rand' mansions and right next door you will have 10000 black people living in a make shift slum built from scavenged material they find from dump sites. Living in absolute squalor. The setting up of special police, the segregation and eventual forced eviction all comes back to apartheid.
Its also an extremely violent movie with huge amounts of gore, so it is not one to take the kids to.

i don't know how south africa is set up enough to understand all of the connotations at work in this movie, but of course i could tell they were saying something beyond what was being shown. i don't know, maybe all the hype that i heard about this movie leading up to it let me down a little. i liked it, don't get me wrong, but for me it was just a pretty good movie. 3/5 stars

Finally went to see it last night. Wow, best sci-fi movie I've seen in years. This and Sunshine are right up there in terms of modern genre movies for me.
I didn't expect this movie to be so violent, but somehow they balanced the gore, politics and humor aspects perfectly. I found myself giggling and being wowed by the fx throughout the entire 2 hrs. The main character, the MNU bureaucrat who starts transforming into an alien (prawn), was very difficult to root for at times, but this added a nice layer to the story where you are never sure who you can trust. The prawns and the Nigerian immigrants/gangs living with them in District 9 are the real stars of this movie. There is a child prawn that steals every scene, and is by far the most likable character in the film, so this isn't just an allegory devoid of good guys. Anyway, the final 15-20 minutes were an awesome good time. One alien weapon in particular is one of the coolest sci-fi inventions in a long time, and it is almost overused, but still provided many great scenes. There definitely should be a sequel, and I hope they don't mess it up.
4.5/5 stars.

Just saw it this weekend. I loved the documentary elements to it, which allowed for explication without bogging down the story (in fact, it created quite a bit of tension as we wonder just what Wikus Van De Merwe could have done that was so awful to his work and family, considering that he was a company man through and through.

Watching his evolution (in many forms) was my favorite part of the movie, as I kept wanting him to "get it," understand who the true "good guys" were, and the movie kept frustrating that desire, which made for less of a cheesy turnaround, as many of these movies resort to.

Boy, I'm not sure I want one. The movie sets up for one, but the messages of corporate hostility, racism, and unethical science may get lost. I suspect we'll get a sequel anyway in "three years."

I finally saw this movie and was quite pleased. The progress of the story is what really impressed me as it didn't bore me. I was first questioning the relationship between Christopher and the human turning into a prawn but saw the deeper concept of why they decided to work together at all costs. Kinda fucked up when comparing it to today's society.

Saw this last night and was blown away. My second favorite movie of the year, after Hurt Locker.

Saw it, and I liked it quite a bit. I have spoilery questions though.
-The fuel had a side effect which altered DNA?
-That was a bug, and not a feature?
-Why did the aliens have to work on the fuel in secret? If the humans goal was to get rid of them, wouldn't we have been more than happy to get them the fuel so they could leave?
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.
