I wish I knew why people like the Beatles. I feel like I'm on a deserted island as the only one in the world that thinks they're extremely overrated.

So, to those who are younger than 40, can you explain why you think the Beatles are great?

Same here. I like a lot of their music, but selectively. Too much of it is really really pretentious fluff though. Then again, you could make the same argument about a lot of artists from the 60s/70s.

For me it's easy, my mom had every Beatles record and that's all I used to listen to growing up.

Coldneck, I think the answer is in your post: your age puts you in a generation behind the ones that had already digested and regurgitated the Beatle experience. Unless you're a serious student of musical and social history, it would be difficult to realize their impact, or realize that practically every current musical trend is a descendent of something they originated.

Anyway, here I am talking about their social impact, and their influence on popular music, and you're probably just saying, "I don't like their songs." Which is a totally valid point; lots of people don't. Even a lot of musicians don't.

Musical taste is a pretty personal thing, I've found. It's also enormously influenced by your personal life experience. (Jody's post is a perfect example).
If, on the greatest date of your life, one where everything was perfect, and you and your wife mutually fell in love...say a certain tune came on the radio as you first kissed her, my guess is that you're gonna like that song for eternity. That's just one example of why you might like a certain tune, but there seems to be a given truth: most people's absolute favorite musical era coincides with what they were listening to between the ages of 12-18.

There's also, concerning the Beatles, an effect that happens a lot in entertainment; when someone gets that popular, companies that can make money off of them tend to exploit them beyond belief. Thus, even the casual fan is deluged with a constant blast of the Beatles catalogue, including the warts, the bizarre experimental songs that didn't quite work, the album fillers that even the band didn't like, the Ringo songs, the early half-decent-but-now-extremely-outdated stuff...it's easy to see why the casual fan would think, "I don't get it, a lot of this stuff sucks."

In the end, I think we all have to accept that we're all going to have a few cultural black holes. I certainly have them; I've never fully understood "fantasy:" Star Trek/Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter...these things are hugely, immensely popular, and I just don't get it. Your "desert island" analogy is apt here...I feel as if everyone's laughing at a joke, only I don't remotely fathom the punchline.

As for the Beatles though...they're the greatest band of all time.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

you know what i think? i think it's become cliche to be a beatles fan. i think a lot of people say they like the beatles because they feel they have to. i think a lot of people who just love the beatles so much couldn't tell you which album has which song. it's gotten to the point that if you're a music fan, then you have to be a beatles fan. i hate that mentality.

i like a lot of beatles songs. i can easily make a top 50 playlist and genuinely like every song. i could also make a top 50 shitty beatles song playlist and hate every one of those songs.

i respect the beatles place in rock history. i appreciate what they did. like kb said, much of what we hear was inpired by the beatles. but i won't worship them. i won't suck their moptop cocks.

when i think of "classic rock", bands like zeppelin and floyd and performers like bowie had a much greater impact on me.

Reasons the Beatles are probably still my #1

- I've never heard better vocal harmonies than lennon and mccartneys. Its not just the notes they're singing, its the way they sing them and he way their voices combine to be something more

- Their songwriting ability was UNMATCHED. Simple songs on the surface but if you break them down there is a LOT going on. they probably didn't even realize it.

- George Harrison is your 3rd best singer/songwriter...'nuff said

- Lennon and McCartney played the ying for each others yang perfectly. McCartney the eternal optimist and Lennon the eternal pessiment. Perfect example: McCartney "It's getting better all the time...better, better, better" Lennon (in the background) "It can't get much worse". Classic!

- Starting with A Hard Days Night, their lyrics started getting real good. By Sgt Peppers/White Album they were superb.

- There is a certain playfulness to most of their music that always puts me in a great mood. I think it's why the "breakfast with the beatles" series has lasted so long.

- rubber soul and revolver are IMHO the most groundbreaking records ever made.

- this is a cliche but it's true, without them the music industry (as a whole, not just record companies) would not be what it is today.

i could go on and on but i have work to do.

that may describe half the younger "beatles fans" but there are still plenty out there like myself who can name every song/album, sing every lyric, give you the background behind those lyrics, etc.

* sleepyhead raises hand. I actually really got into the beatles when I was about 15 or so, after I was into much heaver music. Phan summed up most of my feelings, but they are easily the best songwriters that have ever lived, but they needed to be together to be that great. None of their solo work is anywhere near as good as the stuff they wrote together.

i agree with that. i liked lennons music more when they were together but i liked mccartneys solo work better. mccartney had a lot of good singles when he was solo but none of his albums were that great. lennon was kind of brutal and harrison had his one good album.
