Pitchers And Catchers Report
I like our pen too overall, and if Marmol/Gregg/Heilman put up their career averages, and Cotts removes his head from his ass, the pen will be more than acceptable. I'm just thinking about or middle relief more than usual right now because we don't seem to have any other glaring holes to fill, and since as a group they seem to be sleepwalking through the spring.

And again, if Gaudin had shown any sign of returning to his pre-September form, I wouldn't have anything to complain about. This doesn't seem to be just a ST phenomenon though. He's sucked ass since his injury.

Yeah that's where I am too. I don't really give a single shit about spring training numbers, I'm not worried when good guys suck and I put no stock into minor league guys doing well, Gaudin just seems to have never recovered. He was awful at the end of last year and is just getting plastered this spring. I really liked him when he first came over but he has nothing right now and I don't think its just the Arizona air. I also have no faith in Vizcaino or Cotts.

I do agree that Gregg/Marmol/Heilman at the end, could be our most solid late inning group in a long time.

Look around the league, our bullpen is just fine. Cotts isn't even that bad. Again, this will not be why we go home in October.

Yes it will

I predict we will be up 9-0 in game 5 of the LDS and then Gaudin will come in and give up 10 runs in the 9th, causing us to lose.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Manager Lou Piniella said Harden could be switched with Sean Marshall in the rotation, meaning he would be skipped for his first start April 10 in Milwaukee.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Mitch Atkins, the AAA right-hander who filled in Friday for Harden, is in line to become essentially the sixth starter, coming in from Iowa to make a spot start when necessary, Piniella said. That assumes Jeff Samardzija starts the year in the Cubs' bullpen and not in the Iowa rotation.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

So Harden's going to be skipped the first time through because he's got the flu? Something doesn't add up.

He hasn't thrown enough yet.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Rich Harden was scratched from Friday's start because of the flu and is tentatively scheduled to pitch Tuesday against Colorado.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Harden has made two starts covering 42/3 innings. It appears unlikely he will get enough innings this spring to be ready for the start of the season, though Piniella seemed to suggest he'd still be in the rotation.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Carlos Marmol worked 2 perfect innings in Friday's 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. Kevin Gregg pitched 11/3 innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out three

The two pitchers are competing to be the Cubs' closer.

"Larry and I visited on that," Lou Piniella said, referring to pitching coach Larry Rothschild. "We'll have some word for you by the middle of next week."<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I honestly don't mind which one of them closes as long as they both pitch effectively.

Personally, I feel that this end of our bullpen is more solid than last year (although only time will tell). As much as I liked Wood, it was often a bit scarey when he took the mound last year.

But do you miss a scheduled start and throw simulated game instead because of the flu? I smell some BS here actually.

Despite the HR and a little wildness, this Atkins kid had filthy stuff yesterday. I can see why the organization is high on him now.

After a Cubs trainer tended to Koskie, he left the ballpark and was to be evaluated again Friday morning. ''When he dove for that ball, it caused him some problems, and when he said he wasn't feeling well, we got him out of there right away,'' manager Lou Piniella said.
Spin:
It's unclear whether this was caused by the concussion, but the Cubs didn't take any chances.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Sounds like his vertigo to me and I know what that's all about. It happens frequently to me when I bend down, like he obviously did there. If that's still a problem he can't play. It's something that the doctors can't just diagnose in a simple visit too, it comes and goes, so it's very possible he still has this problem and they weren't aware of it.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And he retired.
