Miles is battling Mike Fontenot for the second base job and there are indications that the Cubs may be leaning toward making him a utility man.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I noticed yesterday Lou mentioned he had all his everyday starters other than Fuk and Soto playing yesterday against Japan, and Fontenot was starting, so that seems like a good sign.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Cubs signed infielder Esteban German to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
It's disappointing that this is the best German could do. The Cubs should already have a full bench with Aaron Miles, Reed Johnson, Joey Gathright, Micah Hoffpauir and Paul Bako. It'd make a lot of sense to bump Gathright and go with German and his superior ability to get on base, but we doubt it will happen.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Not a bad looking player - he put up a .422 OBP in 2006. Downhill from there though. If nothing else he's gotta be better than Luis Rivas as an emergency call up, if he would be willing to play in AAA.

Looks like he has given up at least 1 in the 5th, but it was unearned.

Anyone know about German's fielding ability? I see he's only had 8 games at SS which is disheartening, but it would be nice to know we have a good fielder if needed.

He seems to primarily be a second baseman/third baseman/left fielder. It seems that he is insurance in case Koskie does not want to stay in Iowa after he can opt out in April.
