I know some of you are Kaufman fans, and have already discussed this film, but I finally was able to sit down and watch it.
Wow, my head hurts. This is such a sad, dark, depressing, borderline pretentious film that I couldn't recommend it to everyone. At the same time, you end up looking at the world and your life in a new light once you've sat through it. I had no idea where it was all going and what the point of it was until the final 30 minutes or so, but I have to say it is a complete work of art. I'll have to watch again, but right now I'd have to give it 4.5/5 stars and maybe even 5 after thinking about it more and letting it all sink in. Be forewarned though. This is a tough movie to sit through.

i'm getting it from netflix soon and i'm excited. besides it being kaufman the cast looks stellar, including 2 of my all time favorite ladies, michelle williams and samantha morton.
Life is a bitch, but she's totally doable.

I have one of those depressing friends (the type whose Facebook statuses creep you out) talk about how awesome it was. This makes sense now.

This and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" are two movies I would definitely recommend to anyone not wanting just pure entertainment and maybe a little enlightenment, introspection and quality. Both are instant masterpieces.
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

I completely agree. After sleeping on it, I love it even more. There are so many things in it that just jump out and have so many layers of meaning, that I think I could watch it several times over and still not get the complete picture, yet appreciate it more and more. The only recent film I can compare it to is Mulholland Drive.

Diving Bell was outstanding. I watched Basquiat hundreds of times when i was a young, wanna-be artiste. Schnabel was on Elvis Costello's Spectacle talk show a while back with Lou Reed, i guess they're BFFs and they are too cool for school. it was a great show

No, though it's too bad considering two of the female leads (Morton and Williams) are quite ravishing. The closest you get is Emily Watson showing off her grotesque form and a few other scenes where viagra could have come in handy.

OK. Call me crazy, but I've always thought Emily Watson was kind of cute...and I thought she looked pretty good in this movie.

The sequence where he's watching his wife (Williams) in their fake apartment arguing with the actor "playing" him and she's arguing with him that the guy playing him keeps hitting on her, but he doesn't answer -- the guy playing him does. Which then leads to the argument in the fake apartment, which leads her to tell him she's moving out, but, "You can keep the apartment -- the real one." Then he goes to the "real" apartment, which may or may not be the real apartment to move some boxes out and Williams is there practicing lines for her new play...
Man, that was freaking brilliant. And there were tons of moments like those which were just so well choreographed and well done.
The relationship with PSH and his daughter (his first daughter, Olive) and how that unfolds...there were a handful of moments that brought tears to my eyes. And I honestly shed tears at the end of the movie.

It's a good thing there were plenty of funny moments sprinkled throughout, or I'd be curled up fetal on my bed right now...and for the rest of the week.

Absolutely. There were a couple of times that I lost patience with the movie and started to get slightly annoyed by the tedium, but then something really funny or just plain ingenious would occur and it made me want to keep watching even more to find out how it all made sense. There aren't that many movies that will mindfuck you like this, yet you are thankful for it.

Something about her just doesn't agree with me. It's her face mostly, the eyes in particular.

like the butch said, this'll take some time to digest. first of all, i remembered that every time i see samantha morton i get deeper in love with her. i won't post spoilers just now but i agree with butch about that and a few other scenes that were just so imaginative and once it hit me what he was going for, they really packed a punch.

***when the play was far progressed and diane weist was playing psh and they went into the gay relationship thing threw me a bit but in a good way. maybe this is common knowledge and i'm a bit slow but i wonder if that was just thrown in there because it was a figment of his psyche from when he went to see what's her name in germany or if that was the cause for the split and towards the beginning of the movie he actually killed himself after he realized this affair was discovered. towards the end, i leaned to the latter ****
