MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Longoria signs $100 MM extension. Keeps him with Rays through 2023.

Guess at least one Florida MLB team knows how to hold on to it's own.

Longoria had his season shortened by hamstring injury last season. While hamstrings never get back to 100%, he had surgery to repair it earlier this month. He does present somewhat an injury concern to extend him. Move is somewhat a PR move to counter the debacle which is the Marlins while cementing the foundation for the club for the next decade.

More proof that young stars will no longer be available via free agency for the very distant future, and that you can't rely on that market to build a team any longer. I'm more convinced than ever that our FO gets it.

It's the new reserve clause. It's expensive but no franchise that can afford to keep stars can afford not to. There will still be a bidding war any time a small market team has a superstar about to reach arbitration or hit the end of a contract. And there will be the occasional team that has to deal a marquee player for clubhouse reasons.

Another point of view - as the free agent market becomes a less viable alternative to plugging holes in team's roster the Cubs should have loaded up on free agent signings while drafting and developing prospects the last few years. Players, especially star players, are going to be less likely to move from existing clubs via free agency and in general be more expensive in the future,so why give up years of competing by only concentrating on developing prospects.

I understand that point of view, but who, if any, fit the mold of young, cornerstone-type FAs that we passed on since 2011? I just don't see many (Fielder?...) that would have made sense to sign who would still be in their prime by the time we are good again in a few years. Under normal circumstances, I would agree with you, but this is no longer a normal FA market.

Cubs should have signed Darvish and Fielder last offseason. Neither of these moves provide a young foundation player nor would have these 2 players made the club competitive in 2012 but could be looking at a starting staff of Darvish, Garza, Shark, Cashner and Wood for 2013 and all it would have cost Cubs is cash and perhaps a compensatory draft pick.

If club doesn't start begin playing in existing, shallow a free agent pools, why should fans expect them to play in a more expensive, deeper pools in the future.

I was on board for Darvish, but even he was a question mark at the time having never played MLB ball. And from all indications, the FO went hard after him (wasn't our posting fee right near the top below Texas' insane figure?). Fielder, even though I wanted him at the time as well (given his age and production), was not someone I necessarily think is or was a cornerstone type. I'm glad we unloaded Cashner for Rizzo, as it freed up cash for other needs. Anyway, I think selectively going after FAs still in their primes is good policy, and there is no indication that we won't do so. There just aren't many of those types available, and this shallow market won't get much deeper anytime soon. I don't see the point of overspending on mediocre talent. I could be wrong.

Chooch Ruiz banned 25 games for using amphetamines. Can't say that I'm surprised after his career year.

And they definitely would have, if they were the only team in Major League Baseball. As it is, high-profile free agents have many aggresive suitors, most of who will end up losing on of the free agents in the end.

I really can't fault the FO for betting against a corpulent first baseman being less valuable than Rizzo in a couple years. I can only hope that the money saved will be spent on meaningful pieces when they become available.

BJ Upton signs a 5 year, $75 MM deal with the Braves.

Glad the Cubs couldn't use a 28 year old, All Star quality CF with pop. He's striking out more and his plate discipline is becoming suspect but I guess it's still better to have a declining plate discipline than never had it in the first place e.g. Brett Jackson.

Jackson actually had a higher OBP that Upton. Glad we passed.

Brett Jackson is probably not in our future.
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy
