Why aren't the teams with home field advantage hosting the first 2 games of these series? Another brilliant playoff format change by Emperor Selig and his goons.

I think it's only this season that they are doing this. I don't know why though.

This was the old way they used to play the LCS. I remember the Cubs opening the '84 playoffs at home and then 3 in SD.
Yeah, my dad reminded me of that today. I couldn't remember why they had home field advantage despite our having the better record in '84. Very strange.

The reason that the LDS this year are 2-3 is because they already had the schedule worked out when they finally got the OK from the MLBPA to expand the playoffs this year, so they had to wedge the Wild Card games into the current schedule. They did that by taking out the 2nd travel day that they put in place for a 2-2-1 series, so rather than scheduling games on consecutive days in different cities, they went 2-3 this year. They'll schedule the Wild Card games in advance going forward so the LDS will go back to 2-2-1 next year.

I think 1984 was the last year that the LCS was 5 games, but it was 2-3. Just like home field used to switch each year between the AL & NL in the World Series, home field in the LCS used to switch each year between the East & West divisions of each league.

I will say that there's a difference between being effectively randomly assigned home field in a 2-3 series like the 1984 Padres were and "earning" home field and having to play the first 2 games on the road. For example, I think the A's have a legitimate gripe that they "earned" home field and now go home down 0-2 without even playing a game at home yet.

Yeah, I don't see how it possibility helps the team with home field advantage, unless they sweep the first two on the road which they shouldn't have to. If they go home tied at 1-1, which is probably what you hope for, having to win 2 of 3 in a row at home isn't really that much of an advantageous position despite having home field plus a loss to spend. And obviously it's a daunting task to win three in a row, even at home, in the playoffs with a gun to your head. Then again...Steve Garvey...
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

Ex-Cubs prospect Al Alburquerque pissed off the A's by kissing the ball before tossing to first on a comebacker to the mound. I guess I didn't see it as that big of a deal, but apparently everything pisses off someone these days.

I think it's bush to celebrate before the play is over and it would have been hilarious if he'd Garza'd the toss to first but I'm with you...not that big of a deal.

I totally disagree with the first 2/3 of your post. It's a huge advantage to go home 1-1 with all 3 remaining games at home. I'd argue that going home for the last 3 games tied 1-1 is a bigger home field advantage than a 2-2-1 series. The problem is if you go home down 0-2 like Oakland has to. Oakland earned home field advantage and, if they lose tomorrow, they would only get 1 game at home compared to Detroit's 2. If anything, MLB is lucky that the road team has already won at least 1 game in the 3 other Division Series, so Oakland is the only team facing that problem.

In this case, I think it's funny, but I'm biased. It would piss me off if a Cardinals or Yankees pitcher did something like that.

Speaking of Card's pitchers, Garcia undergoes MRi after being pulled from last start in the 2nd inning.

Considering it's the Cards, my guess is that Jaime will miss next start but come back in a bullpen role to pitch 6 innings of relief to get the Cards into the Series. Prior to Series, he'll announce that he no longer has a working ligament in his throwing arm and a shredded labrum in his shoulder so expects to miss the 2013 season but is available for duty in the World Series.

Wow, I didn't see this one coming considering Dusty's health issues this season: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8508246/dusty-baker-manager-cincinnati-reds-agrees-two-year-contract-extension-2014

Quote:PHOENIX -Former Diamondbacks announcer Mark Grace has been indicted on 4 felony DUI counts, which could land him years in prison.

48-year-old Grace of Paradise Valley was pulled over in Scottsdale in late August for having expired registration tags on his vehicle.

After speaking with Grace and administering standard field sobriety tests, the officer took Grace into custody for DUI.

Scottsdale Police say that Grace was driving without the required interlock device and that his license was suspended for a prior DUI in Scottsdale from May 30, 2011.

His blood was submitted for testing and he was released. Testing showed Grace had a blood alcohol level of .095.

Grace could spend up to 3.75 years in prison if convicted of all 4 counts of aggravated DUI. The charges are aggravated because he was driving without the required interlock device and with a suspended license.
