Pitchers And Catchers Report
QUOTE No. Wrong. When the other 50% of a stat is diluted because it's not part of a player's game (ie. does not hit for power), you cannot use it as a blanket comparison. OPS only works when you are comparing similar players to each other. When you use OPS, you can use it to compare Lee to Ramirez or Soriano to Bradley. However, it makes no sense to use it to compare Bradley to Theriot or Soriano to Miles. If you want to use it to compare Theriot to Miles, then go ahead. However, using it to compare players that have vastly different skill sets is not using the stat the way it should be used.

exactly. ops is flawed. it overvalues guys who hit for power and do little else and it undervalues singles hitter who get on base but can't hit for power. if the hall of fame was based solely on ops, guys like rod carew and the waner brothers wouldn't be there and thats just ridiculous.

if a player bats .320 and walks 70 times times but only hits one home run, does he suck?

But Miles happens to be a good baseball player. I don't want Johnny Hustle on the team if he hits .240.

Let's just hope 2008 isn't a fluke. Because if he reverts to his career averages, I'm not sure you can call him "good."

If he hits .290, that will be plenty good enough.

Not if his OBP is .329.

Miles is also a decent hitter from the right side for a middle infielder. He put up a slash line of .315/.377/.378 last year, and his three year line is .297/.374/.358. Something else I also noticed while looking at his splits is that he has hit very well during day games, last year he went .392/.420/.531. Those numbers are probably just a case of a small sample size, but his three year line is still a respectable .321 /.364/.420.

Miles is a role player, and if used in the correct roles he can actually bring some value to the team.

It would be fine, and as I've said, he'll be batting a lot more from the right-handed side than in past years, where he's very good. You guys are nuts about this, it's not going to make a single difference on us getting to the playoffs and the guy we got rid of was pathetic in the playoffs for us aside form his wind-aided homer.

I think it's hilarious and borderline insane that you guys are this concerned that your utility guy might only hit .290 with a .330 OBP.

Thank you. It's SOI at it's best. When there is virtually nothing to bitch about, it's time to look at the little things. We've already beaten the DeRosa trade to death. Chances are Bradley will be pretty solid. So there's nothing left but to take shots at our 24th man.
I got nothin'.

On a different note: What are the predictions on Harden's health this year?

I disagree. Sometimes all it takes is doing something once, and suddenly you are a lifetime member of that club. For instance, I've only molested ONE child in my life, now suddenly, I'm a child molester.

Weird.

good point.

Hoff should make the team, Gathright should be replaced by another IF.

The 24th man never gets 400 at bats. Never.
Lou specifically said Miles will get 400 at bats.
It gives some of us cause for great consternation.

BTW, since when is it considered a good thing to have lots of mediocrity? You guys are always saying things like "Oh, he's only a back-up, it doesn't matter that much," and "It doesn't matter if he can't hit, we have other guys to do that."
I don't see the logic in that.

What's more, it's usually the exact same posters who celebrate guys who do the "little things" (that supposedly will help us eke out some close ballgames) who become real blase about "the 25th guy on the roster." It seems like a contradiction to me...either everything a team does important to the final result, or conversely, everything is kinda loosey-goosey, and "fuck it, let the chips fall where they may."

I think that a lack of attention to detail may be what's hurt the Cubs in the past.
Just one man's opinion.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance
