QUOTE (HTC @ Jan 30 2009, 06:20 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>So Marshall, Gaudin, Heilman and Shark could all start? That's not even mentioning Guzman or Atkins although I doubt either if them gets a chance to start this year unless they're dealt. If we're not getting Peavy, I'd just as soon let one of those first four guys start instead of going out and signing Looper or any other of the crap on the market not named Ben Sheets.
Yeah I feel pretty good about having those 4 (or 6) available to compete for the 5th starter's job, and then around in AAA or the pen to step in if required during the season (AND potentially available for a big trade at mid-season). Good depth. You have to think there is a decent chance one of them could really take off as well... they're all capable.

In that respect, we really don't need Peavy. He is a huge luxury... like others have said, if he was never an option/rumour, I don't think we'd be too worried about this team as-is. This is a fine team chaps!

I watched him say it on television. Bush said going to Iowa's definitely a possibility to work on starting, and that Samardzija will have a large say in it. I mean, I don't think he has an automatic spot in the pen anyway with how many righties we have, he'll have to pitch well in ST. If he does, then it still will come down to what they and he think is the best for him for the future it sounds like.

Anyway, that's how I interpreted what he was saying. A written report on it would help.

I'm probably overreacting a bit.

I'm fine if they think he would only be slightly better in the pen than another option that he would displace, but decide to let him start at AAA because it's better for his long-term value to the team. But if he's significantly better than the other 12th pitcher option (or whatever number he'd be), then he better be in the pen, period. I don't give a shit what he wants.

Cott's just says 'no trade contract', so maybe it is a full no trade.

QUOTE Jeff Samardzija says he hopes to "avoid the whole Triple-A stint" as he competes for the fifth starter's role with the Cubs this spring.

A starter throughout his minor-league career, Samardzija pitched exclusively in relief for the Cubs after he was called up last summer. General manager Jim Hendry and assistant GM Randy Bush have indicated he might have to open the season at Triple-A Iowa to stretch out so he can eventually start.

"I plan to go into spring training in the best shape possible," Samardzija said Friday during a conference call to announce the formation of a Notre Dame scholarship in the name of his late mother.

"I got word that I was going to get a shot [to start] in spring training. That's all I need to know. There's an open spot, and during spring training I'll fight tooth and nail to earn it.

This is the third thread that I've opened today and it's the third thread that you've had the last post. It might make you happy to know this is the third thread I've laughed out loud at today.
